I know that's not based on restaurants and bars within walking distance. ISU has got to be dead last in that category.

ISU is not a town; Ames is.

I think 8 of the 10 were either in the Big 12 or B1G, interesting...

That's got to be about the most unrealistic ranking I've ever seen. I grew up in Ames, I love Ames...but its pretty much a **** college town.

Re: ISU #2 Best College Town (Iowa City #4)

OK, what is that picture even of for Iowa City? First, it's like an artist's rendering or something, and I'm pretty sure that building doesn't even exist...spent 5 minutes scouring aerial images, got nothing. My first thought was that it was one of the non-winning bidders for the Chauncey property, but it isn't one of those...

It's by the american institute for economic research. It's economic strength, not 'duude, this town can party', like playboy's college town rankings.

College towns brah...Madison ranks #2 in the college small metros. Look at the expanded rankings and they make A LOT more sense.

Ames also recently just made a list Forbes put together of the top 25 places to retire, it makes a lot of these types of lists.

The building pictured as "Iowa City" looks like the Davis Brown building in downtown Des Moines.

Re: ISU #2 Best College Town (Iowa City #4)

Iowa City is run by the salaries of the medical staff of the U of Iowa Hospitals. That money pit for the state drives their economy

--that is why they have more restaurants, cultural outlets. The thousands of high-paying salaries of the U of I hospital

It ain't because some hick Hawk fans from Dundee, IA decend on Iowa City on a football saturday

Ames is quant and nice in its' own right.

Both have great tailgating for FB--but completely different. Ames is a giant midway or two--wide open and fun.

IC has dozens of pockets of areas for tailgating--some cozy and fun, unless you're a stranger to the area and don't know anyone on gameday, then it's no fun at all.

I think that may be the first time I have seen Dundee brought up on this forum. Dundee, back porch to Backbone State Park.

Interesting, I grew up in Ames too and think it's a pretty good college town. As another poster said, this isn't a list of top party schools. Low unemployment, low crime, beautiful campus.
