Looking for a new laptop... Help!!

Hey Cyclone fans I am looking for some help on buying a new laptop. Our old HP finally died last night afer 4+ years and now we are on the market. With a baby coming up we want to be money smart. Our sole purpose for the computer is internet browsing and an occasional Microsoft Works program. I was hoping to get some ideas on good laptops from you and some prices. Thanks in advance!!

Are you looking for a regular-sized laptop, or wanting something smaller like a netbook?

If you're looking even more minimalist, you could go the Chromebook route as well. Instead of getting Windows, you get Google's Chrome OS, and access to any of their products like Google Docs and stuff. Saves from having to buy the software like Office, but then you're kind of limited on what you can install. No personal hands-on experience with it, though.

I think we want a regular sized laptop because we do a lot of our finances with Microsoft and own 2007 which will work for us. Just looking for a good brand and processor that runs cool, quiet, and fast with a good price. No gaming done here or programming, but want it to last as well. I was wondering what people think of Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, HP, Toshiba, or Dell and what is the best ones out there for the $3-400 range. Thanks!

I'm a Lenovo and Toshiba fan. A quick two minute search on Newegg turned up:

    Newegg.com - lenovo G580 (59344049) Notebook Intel Core i3 3110M(2.40GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 1600 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW Intel HD Graphics 4000

I don't think I'm alone when I say I'd like to see more and more planets fall under the ruthless domination of our solar system.

Re: Looking for a new laptop... Help!!

Lenovo - Have one that's less than a year old would recommend them.
HP - Have an older one that's lasted ~6 years; not sure of recent model quality.
Toshiba - Had one for work and wasn't impressed. Too much Toshiba branded bloatware that was difficult to removed as it was intigrated into running the computer (touchpad, hard drive monitoring, etc). Also had major problems with overheating.
Dell - Have one for work now. It's fine.

Overall, I'd look in your price range and then check online reviews for that specific model and similar ones. $3-400 range is going to limit quality of components, which isn't as important for your usage (browsing and word processing will be fine) but more for longevity of the machine. If Lenovo has one in your price range that would be my first recommendation.

I know you want to be money saavy, but my suggestion would be a Mac. You can find ways to finance the purcahse, and you will have absolutely no problems with it. I bought mine almost 2 years ago now and it works like the day I bought it. This is after going through PC laptops at a rate of about one every 2 or 3 years.

I just bought one from dell.com/outlet and got a killer deal. They mostly have refurbished ones, but I got one that someone just cancelled their order.

Doubt any normal person is going to "go through" a PC laptop just browsing the web & using Microsoft Works...

Instead of buying a Mac, buy a PC & if you do happen to "go through" it in 2 years you can just buy another one. (& STILL spend less than you would have on a Mac...)

Personally, I just bought a Samsung a few months ago for about $370 from Best Buy & have been pleased so far. Windows 8 took a little getting used to, but I'm fine with it.

I second this motion. I had a Satellite for a few years, and that son of a gun would get so hot I literally couldn't sit it on my lap. It would run so hot that it would slow every process down and then shut off. I tried cooling pads. I even set it on top of a box fan.. But it still just fried.

Re: Looking for a new laptop... Help!!

I've had this ASUS for about 2 years now, and it's been working amazing for me. I got it at Best Buy for under $500, and I've been able to play any games I own on it with no issues.

While this model may not be sold widely anymore, it says loads about ASUS and their overall value and quality.

You should get the Mac Book Pro. The one with the 15" screen will allow you to web surf.

Come on. We're not even past the first page and this has already turned into a Mac vs. PC ******* match. If you want to discuss Mac vs. PC resurrect one of the thousand other threads on that topic. The OP asked for help in finding a new laptop and they obviously want it to be a PC.

Exactly, not only this, but he stated he already own MS Office. I doubt, on a money saving budget, he wants to buy a new version of that for a mac after spending the money on a new mac.

Back on topic - We bought a new Dell 17" laptop about 2 years ago. IT's been an absolute dream. My wife and kids are on the thing almost constantly when we are home and we haven't had one issue with it. It's the first laptop I have ever owned, so I can't compare, but I certainly would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone shopping.
