Twister Sister Summary - ladies clinch #2 seed in wild victory

If you missed this game tonight, and I mean being there, then you missed a game that featured just about everything imaginable...including some very bizarre things.

Through most of this game the only lead that Iowa state would see was 2-0. This team was cold as ice from the field and in the first half the defense was suspect as well. It took me a while to put it all together, but after grousing about the ineffective zone that was consistently getting beat by the quicker OSU guards, I realized the purpose. These players were tired. Coach Fen was trying to protect their legs. Problem is, even the zone was exploited by the fresher cowgirls.

Nothing the ladies did in the first half seemed to work. Layups were coming up short. Three point shots by everyone were bricks. Short shots that were the staple of Hal were falling short or clanking off the rim. To make matters worse, we were giving up rebounds to OSU which led to too many second chance shots...ones they usually made on the way to a 38-31 half time lead. 38 points is just not the result of any semblance of good defense by an Iowa State team. Yet in many ways we were lucky to be that close.

The second half started out even uglier if that was possible. We just couldn't find a way to score and the lead was extended to 13 as OSU converted a 3 on a second chance shot. Way too many of those throughout the game. Unfortunately they usually were a 3. The team literally looked like they were walking in their sleep. And then it happened...a series of the most bizarre events that would light a fire under this team. At about the 15 minute mark the ladies began to make some plays. They started to show some life and whittled away at the lead. Bizarre play #1 was technical 1 on the Cyclones. Let me backtrack a bit.

This game was a perfect example of incompetent officiating. This group lost control of this game and was woefully inconsistent throughout. You know it's bad when the TV commentators say the officials have lost it(my buddy texted me during the game to mention that). Their incompetence was measured by the Bill Fennelly barometer. In the first half he was simply red in the face. Then came the standing on the sidelines tapping his foot with arms crossed while staring down the officials. Then it was the first technical that would give the cowgirls a 5 point lead after the sisters had worked so hard to whittle it down. That followed an insane call that was clearly an offense against the cowgirls, but was called for them instead. This is when the crowd came to life and believe me, their energy transferred to the ladies. And it got worse. We would stay within striking range as the minutes ticked down and then after another inept call by the officials the ISU bench was given a technical. And then a fan was booted and escorted out by police. Even OSU got in other act as their bench drew a technical. As you can tell, the officials had lost it. The final barometer was when the jacket came off. Wowza!

Lost in all of this chaos was a crowd that was as boisterous as any I've been a part of in quite some time. They were on their feet for the last 7 minutes screaming. The ladies felt it and then the three's began to fall. Moody, Kidd, Prins, and Brynn would nail them. The team would hit 6 of 8 in the half. Pop was fighting like a banshee as she fought for boards and made some great plays underneath. Anna fought for boards. It was some gritty determined play for this team to come back from the dead and survive this slugfest. Even at the end if was a struggle as we held a 3 point lead and had the ball. A basket or a free throw would make it a two possession game. Uncharacteristically, Hal dribbled the ball off of her foot and OSU would score cutting the lead to 1. But these ladies wouldn't fold. They again extended the lead to 3 and did a superb job defending the 3 point line to ice the game 73-70. Crazy, crazy , crazy.

    Points from the game....
Nikki - couldn't hit the broad side of a barn early. Had decent numbers, but man did she have some dumb, and I don't use that word lightly, turnovers. Bad passes that just drive you nuts. I honestly thought she would have as many turnovers as assists, but the scorer saw otherwise. Even worse, she committed some crazy fouls.

Pop - she carried this team on her shoulders tonight. Great hustle. Incredible inside baskets at critical times. 18 points, 8 boards, 3 assists, and an attitude. Loved it.

Anna - had her moments and pulled in some key boards, hit. Critical 3 point shot and free throws. 5 big assists.

Hal. After struggling most of the game she really came alive and hit for 21 points and a bunch of boards. She had to work for it tonight! I particularly enjoyed the elbow to the OSU players chops.

Free throws - 19-20 is as good as it gets around here. This team calmly went to the line, tired legs and all, and just hit shot after shot.

After the game the three seniors gave their speeches. Even these were some of the weirder moments on senior night. Of particular note to several of us was that Z and Anna never mentioned any coach by name (except former Coach Easley who Fen invited to sit on our bench with his wife). It was just strange. Had to leave it to Pop to talk about each coach and the influence they had on her development.

This game was one for the books. Gritty determination by a team supported by rabid fans. On the road this was probably a loss. At home...the magic rules. Unfortunately around the water cooler the discussion will be about incompetent officials in the best conference in the country. Sad but true.

Next up? The winner of KU and TCU. Teams we split with this year. We are the #2 seed in the tourney (hey coach of the year voters!). We get a preview of that first game tomorrow night as KU and TCU play. I'll be flying to Dallas Thursday so will keep these reports coming from the tournament. Hope to see you all there...

Great Summary. I was watching on game tracker when the Tech's were called. Even through that limited medium, you could tell there was something off on the officiatig.

That was A highlight of the night for me. Maybe Jack was the only one on the staff with enough guts to stand up for the girls when they are being mistreated. The silence says a lot.

The highlight? Wow. Really? Sad. Especially in light of the best player...the one who came the farthest in development...noting how she got there. That speaks volumes.

This was a game I was very worried about after how badly they beat us on the road. A great game to win for the seniors. Now we need to win some games in Dallas and in the NCAA!

Congrats to the ladies locking up second! An extra day of rest can't hurt.

Yeah, that was weird, only Pop mentioned each coach specifically. But her speech about BF summed everything up nicely on how BF has greatly impacted her life.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - ladies clinch #2 seed in wild victory

How many technicals were called last night? I don't think I have seen an official throw out a fan before in Big12 play. I agree with Molly that when officials start listening to the fans then they have loss control of the game. My comment on Moody's game last night would be that her decisions and lack of focus are why Buckley will be so important next season. I have a feeling that BF will be less patient with her screwups when we have a quality backup. About, Pop's speech, she has a lot to thank the Iowa State coaching staff for and mainly for giving her a chance when they recruited her. They helped but it was her drive and work ethic that made her the player we saw last night. I am hoping that she gets drafted by Minnesota so that I can get up to see some of her games.

I checked back at the ESPN recruit grades on the three:

    Prins - 94 ranked 44th in country
    Zimmerman - 88
    Poppens - 80

Poppens HS team was not very good, and I think she got the Shaq treatment a lot because she was not a good free throw shooter. Did you catch her quote from Coach Thomas during her speech? Nice she recognized him, and the entire A-P community who went through a lot after she committed to ISU.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - ladies clinch #2 seed in wild victory

Nice recap cous. There were a ton of big buckets last night by our ladies, but I think one of the biggest was Kidd's step-back 3 off the bounce. She only made one shot on the night (1 for 2) and that shot either tied it or put us ahead. I had just told my wife that the roof might blow off Hilton if we hit a 3 on this trip...and on cue Kidd nailed it.

Royal - I caught her quote from Coach Thomas and thought that personified Pop.

I also appreciated Pop's comments about AP and Coach Thomas. You can tell that community has a certain hard work ethic built into it after everything they've been through.

The second half from the 15 minute mark down was electric. We had the pops out and were working them like crazy. Heck, I even got text messages saying the pops must have been in play! We'll be taking a big batch with us to the tourney in Dallas later this week.

What was the story behind the Hockey Team following Pop ? It was great to see her acknowledging the team.

What you saw watching the senior speeches are three young women who have grown tremendously through their collegiate experiences and have learned how to stand up for themselves and stand tall with their teammates. It was clear on the court -- simply how they led the team through incredible adversity in this game, persevered, and were deservedly rewarded with a win. It was clear in their comments on how they are living their lives, their priorities, and where they want to go with what they have learned. Credit to them and everyone who has helped them get there.
