Hilton Magic and Jock Jams 1995, Two Peas in a Pod

When I was younger (20 years ago-ish), I was grateful enough to go to many many homes games, thanks to a friend who always had tickets. Yes they were in the balcony, and yes it was awesome.

I remember getting the programs, and getting the BIG posters of players, most notably, my personal bench warmer favorite, Ha-Keem Abdel-Khaliq. After we got older, we mainly watched games on TV, and followed the Cyclones that way. Nothing wrong with it, just the position I was in.

Recently, that friend has returned to Ames, and once again come into tickets for us to use.

It's been a blast experiencing Hilton Magic once again. The seats the same, the temperature in the balcony still as warm as ever with a full house. The first game at Hilton in nearly 20 years, and BAM, JOCK JAMS 1995! A great bit of nostalgia.

My question is, what are other peoples opinions on the same old seating, and (for the most part) the same CD soundtrack from all those years ago? What do you miss most? What would you like to see?

No comment on the music, but the upper sections are hotter than the third circle of hell.

Im fine with the jock jams intro. The fans get into it, so its working on that level. I actually like the whole sequence there right before, i get pumped when 'let it rock' comes on and the mayor enters the arena, and that goes all the way through the intro video, jock jams, and into tipoff.

I believe it was Ha-Keem Abdel-Khaliq. He'd do the Cyclone Fever reports for WOI.

It has to be that old because 1) It works and 2) People would complain about anything new.

"Let It Rock" and a standing O when The Mayor hits the floor into the intros and jock jams is perfect for me.

My only minor complaint would be ideally the time after home intros would be shorter because the crowd can lose a little energy by the time the ball is actually tipped.

And they should invest in shutters for the lights.... but this is all dreamworld stuff and is probably impractical. What we have now is awesome and better than 98% of arenas.

The amount of time between the pre-game buzzer and tip-off is dictated by the Big 12. When some schools started doing major productions for starting lineups several years ago, it created an inconsistency in timing. So they settled on a consistent timing protocol.

There are 6 minutes to fill. Figure 1:30 for the anthem, and the designated 1:00 break between lineup completion and tip, and you have 3:30 for visiting lineups, some type of pump-up video, and home lineups. Believe it or not, that's a loooooong time.

For example, at women's games the announcer goes through the visiting lineup in about 30 seconds, and the home lineup in 45. Then we all sit and wait for 2 minutes, because the 6:00 total is non-negotiable.

Thank you for pointing that out. Edited above to reflect that.

At the football games, the do the Emergency Broadcast Annoucement, and it is one of my personal favorites. At the basketball games they do the tornado siren. I think it would be pretty cool if they did the broadcast at Hilton as well. I love it.

I really, really, really hate Jock Jams. The unoriginal factor kills it for me. As much as I hate Kansas, their pre-game routine is one of the top routines in college basketball. "Til I Collapse" is a sweet song for the background of the video.

I could deal without the "Cyclone Siren."

Then I would do something to make it end a little closer to tip. That is interesting to know though, and it is likely a lot harder than it sounds.

I agree with the OP, the fact that it hasn't really changed from my childhood is great to me. It was a blast back then and is a blast now. Jock Jams '95 is cheesy, but it's OUR cheesy. It's great to see the place rocking again too. I went to college during the seasons of a certain head coach (who shall remain nameless but initials are W.M.) and Hilton lost a lot it's luster in my eyes. Glad to see that Fred has brought the energy back. That place is my childhood playground, and I love every second of being there.

I think our intro is awesome! I wish the band played more during timeouts like in the 80's and 90's though. They really started using the PA more than the band when I was in school 01-04.
