I believe Fred supports a shorter shot clock (but not 24)

Re: College basketball: 'An old jalopy in need of repair'

I thought Seth Davis had a great point in that interview with Tim Brando posted here on Tuesday. He said something similar to what this article says. College basketball has become too physical (particularly on the women's side). In fact, according to Davis, the consensus "among those in the know" is that college MBB is more physical than the NBA now, since the NBA has gotten rid of the hand check, the arm-bar, and some other things.

I think college needs to do the same thing. It's not supposed to be a game dominated by physical power, but that's where it is headed...

Re: College basketball: 'An old jalopy in need of repair'

I agree the shot clock needs to be reduced. 24 seconds may be too short, but I think 35 is too long. I think 28-30 is probably where I'd like to see it.

The freedom of movement thing is funny. I think everyone agrees that offenses should have more freedom of movement. But then people complain about the calls when they actually do get made, just because we're so used to all the contact that is currently in the game. If the college basketball community really does want that change, they're going to have to get used to a lot of boring games with lots of free throws, at least until the game adjusts, which could take a while.

Also, I haven't seen this idea floated anywhere, but I think the court could be widened a couple feet to give the offense a little more room to space the floor.

Doing this would make a lot of good coaches who have the strategy of slowing the game down look bad. I am in support of a shorter shot clock however. Not only does it speed up the game but it rewards defenses for playing good defense instead of a lucky breakdown occurring 30 seconds into the shot clock.

Maybe just not watch the Big 10 so much?

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I don't think it will take that long to adjust if the refs will commit to calling the fouls. After a few early season games where the majority of the starters foul out, the coaches/players should get the message.

And to add to this, there was an article awhile back that said that officials were actually calling fewer and fewer fouls. So they have plenty of room to be calling more.

As far as Bill Self is concerned, a charge no longer exists.

Do you remember the pre-shot clock era?
Did you enjoy seeing the four corners offense for the last 10 minutes of a game?
