    Jump shot free throw

I always wondered if they were legal and why no one ever does them. I just assumed they were illegal, guess I should read the rules. Strange

    Re: Jump shot free throw

I would assume people don't do them because they worry about jumping over the line

As long as you don't cross the line before the ball hits the rim.

    Re: Jump shot free throw

I'm pretty sure Maurice Newby of UNI fame shot his free throws this way in high school at DSM East. My older brother played against him in high school and at the time I thought it was the coolest thing.

    Re: Jump shot free throw

Worry about crossing the line, also, it is easier to replicate the motion of a non-jump shot (less moving parts). Which a good free-throw shooter is all about repetition. The reason for a jump shot in a game is to get a height advantage over a defender. No need to do that at the line.

Ill put any dollar that if I get this ball again, Long said, Its going in.

Generally, the less movement the better on free throws because there is far less to go wrong if you have a repetitive motion with little movement. You can see the touch is so much better on standing FTs than jump shots -- just watch how many FTs hit the front rim and roll in. Evans just has a complete case of the yips and is just trying to shoot 50% somehow so nobody really cares about the extra movement.

    Re: Jump shot free throw

Most good shooters will tell you your upper body should stay almost exactly the same regardless of where you're shooting from, and you use your legs to put more power behind the shot. Most players don't need to jump to get that extra "mmph" on their shot from the FT line. And as others have said, jump shots are useful for getting over defenders, and it's much easier to only concentrate on your upper body and not replicate the lower body motions involved in jump shooting.
