    Mike Singeltary says no.

    Singletary won't be coaching Baylor

Mike Singletary will remain the 49ers' assistant head coach and linebackers coach after withdrawing from consideration for the head-coaching vacancy at his alma mater, Baylor University.
Singletary said Thursday that a couple of sticking points surfaced during his talks this week with Athletic Director Ian McCaw and, rather than drag out the process, he decided to "let it go."
Singletary said there were "philosophical differences" that would have prevented him from taking the job.
He said he had told McCaw that he would not leave his 49ers job before the end of this season.
"I was going to finish what I started. I wasn't going to compromise on that," Singletary said.
Singletary also wanted to remain directly involved in coaching his players, rather than delegating to assistants so that he could fulfill other obligations as a sort of football ambassador for Baylor.
"They asked, 'Are you comfortable with letting your staff coach your team while you're speaking and doing other things?' " Singletary said. "No, I'm a coach. I'm not a politician."
Singletary said he considered the job only because he attended Baylor and his son is a freshman on the team. As a parent and school booster, he's hopeful Baylor will "find the right guy."
He said his preference all along was to remain in the NFL. "I'm going to finish what I started," Singletary said. "This is what I do. This is what I've become accustomed to."

Maybe McCarney can get a job here.

that would be a perfect job with his connections down there plus their situation is kinda similar to when he took over at ISU

    Re: Baylor Turndown

If I was Baylor I'd probably interview McCarney. If you take Iowa State to bowl games you can do it at Baylor. I'm shocked Baylor has been down so long. Back in the day they had some nice seasons but nothing in recent history.

    Re: Baylor Turndown

Call me pessimistic, but I just don't see Baylor making HUGE improvement anywhere in the near future...even if they got McCarney or an equal or better coach. If some people think it's hard for Iowa State to compete year in year out in the big 12 north, think about what Baylor goes up against year in year out down there in the south. I mean we get a 2 year break from the Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Techs of the world, they don't.

That is a BIG blow to Baylor. Mike was their primary target, the whole reason they fired Guy Morriss. I really don't think they have a secondary target of any quality, that they'd feel good about, who would be any better than the guy they fired.

Plus, those reasons Singeltary sited were entirely reasonable ones. Any good candidate is bound to think twice about Baylor now that Singeltary has turned them down. Who would want to be a "politician" coach?

Maybe they can get Art Briles before the Tech coach leaves and that opens up. I agree that I don't see Baylor succeeding on a high level. They are the red headed step child in Texas.

I thought Singletary played in the secondary....

Would Fran be a fit for Baylor?

He definitely would have the Texas connections.
