Advice for For Sale/By Owner - Car sale

I'm going to be selling my Mazda 6 here pretty soon and don't really need a new car so am looking into just selling it myself.

Can anyone give me any good info on what I should/shouldn't do? This will be my first time doing this. Any info at all on the process would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Re: Advice for For Sale/By Owner - Car sale

Search online for a simple bill of sale for a car. Sign the title over to them after cash is in hand (meet at a bank if you want it verified as non-counterfeit). Keep your plates to turn back into the county.

Craigslist will give you several spam emails that are easy to spot and people that stand you up but eventually you'll sell on there if you chose that route.

Re: Advice for For Sale/By Owner - Car sale

What ISUAgronomist said is really all you need to do once you've agreed to sell the car, but you should take some precautions in getting to that point.

    - Meet a potential buyer at a public place. Don't bring them to your house unless paperwork is to be signed imminently and you know exactly who they are.

    - Create a new email address to use on ads. Throw it away when you're done with it.

    - If you want to list a phone number, get a new number through Google voice. Again, it's something you can throw away when you're done (and it's free).

I have never sold a car on Craigslist but I have sold other things using it. I sold two cars using cars.com and it was a piece of cake.

Second the no test drives without you in the car. Have someone you know (not in the car with you) aware you are on a test drive.

I have sold several vehicles on craigslist with no problems at all except the spam/scam emails which are pretty easy to spot. I would ask for cash or a cashier's check only for payment.

Re: Advice for For Sale/By Owner - Car sale

Don't screw up on the title transfer. Did that once. Big pain in the *** to get a new one.

I've sold two cars. One was cash sale. The other was by company check. Did a little research on the people buying and they were legit, and I wasn't using craigslist. Still kept the title and lien release until check cleared.

If you don't go with them on a test drive. Make sure you have collateral. One I went with, the other I had keys to a MUCH nicer vehicle while they test drove. Oh, and their kids.

I've sold with online ads... findcars.com actually but I don't think they focus on central Iowa. Very easy. One listing a car until it sells. Both sold with the initial people looking at the cars.

Re: Advice for For Sale/By Owner - Car sale

    Go to Edmunds .com
You can get a book value and print a sale flyer. It's easier to deal with some jackwagon buyer if you can offer some tangible evidence on what car is worth.
Sign a bill of sale and like stated above read title close when you fill out and sign.

Re: Advice for For Sale/By Owner - Car sale

I sold one on Craigslist a couple years ago to some ********* who said the car was for his 16 year old daughter's birthday. A couple days later I see it on craigslist for about $1500 more than I sold it with some rust buffed out and a new paint job.

I was pretty hot about that since I only sold to him vs. someone else based on the "gift for daughter" reasoning.

Don't overestimate what your car is worth. I see that on craiglist / e-bay a lot.

Re: Advice for For Sale/By Owner - Car sale

Forums can be a good way to sell a car, particularly if there is a following for that car.

That's how I sold my SVT Focus and my corvette. When I'm ready to sell my Mazdaspeed6, I'll probably go through a forum as well, particularly if trade in sucks for it.

Let them test drive it. If they steal it, you have only the deductible and you get a check from your insurance. Less hassle than selling a car.

this MAY be true, but it is a major pain in arse...crime prevention is much better, trust me on this one
