Too many times tonight in KUs rotation on offense a guy got left eide open at the free throw line after we defended abou 30 seconds. That's a pretty easy shot for any college player.

You're missing the point. Of course media attention is great. But at least a couple of people in this thread have basically said, "Who cares if we can't play defense? Jay Williams loves us!" All fine and good, but in the time it took Jay Williams to utter those words we just gave up yet another three pointer that cost us a win in regulation.

Improving our defense will do more good for our program than Jay Williams' words ever will.

    I disagree completely.

Let's start holding the ball and chuck up a three as the clock runs out. We'll have awesome defensive numbers then.

You're right, it really comes down to two options...either we can have the defense, or we can have the media attention. NOT BOTH!

4 missed hail Mary 3 pointers and we are 4-0 in those games. Get a life.

That is, in essence, the argument you agreed with earlier in this thread.

Re: I hope Fred puts more emphasis on D in the future.

Yep. Ballscreen d was very poor. Went to game tonight. Most upset with Johnson 3 when we were up 5. Horrible no hedge allowed for Wide open 3.

Breakdown was similar to 3 in Lawrence. Next 3, niang hedged correctly but Johnson made big shot.

just because Fred is creating a great culture doesn't mean there aren't opportunities to improve! everyone can improve, always. Late game at top of list. O and D. Should have gone to hoop with 4.9 remaining too.

D has to improve. can't rely on being best 3 point shooting team as it is not sustainable.

    You're showing your age.

And no, you're the one making the accusation, so you show me where I agreed that media attention and good D are mutually exclusive. Good luck finding it, because I'm not deranged and would never agree to something so ludicrous.

There's something very wrong when you hit 17 3's, lose by 12, and let a guy averaging 9 ppg go off for 39.

You can't count on hitting those three's every single night, but you sure as hell can always lock someone down. Defense doesn't slump.

And for those of you bringing up McDermott; don't be idiots. Floyd and Eustachy ran solid defensive programs and had quite a bit of success against elite teams like KU. Eustachy won five in a row against Kansas; you don't do that by jacking up three's every time down the court.

More often than not the teams that can play good half-court defense are much more successful in March than those who can't. That's just a fact.

It's really disappointing that we can't talk bball here. Fair analysis of play should be welcomed. Instead we name called, and downplayed the validity of coaching and statistics for subjective arguments.

Every fanbase says the others are the mouthbreathers, but I'd be lying to say I didn't see that here.

And to those making jokes on better d stats by playing slow...you know kenpom and other defensive stats can be adjusted for pace of play and opponent. Our d lacks even when those adjustments are made.
