    Niangs foul trouble

Does anybody worry that Niang my be one of those guys that may get labeled by the refs down the road as someone who fouls a lot? The last few games I swear one or two calls each game his hands were straight up. He's not the fastest guy out there but plays very smart basketball. I personally think the refs do try to even the fouls up if they're a bit lopsided and so maybe just bad luck with Niang.

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

i think its gotta be tough for niang to go up against much taller opponents. he is often out of position and that hurts him alot. and i agree that there are alot of fouls called on him when his hands are straight up. sometimes he makes body contact, and other times the refs are just plain tarded!! i saw quite a few horrible calls against us today. mostly against niang and ejim.

    This is Ophion speaking.

He is a freshman. As his career progresses calls will go his way more.

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

I'm not worried about that at all. If anything, good players usually get a little favoritism. I think his foul problems boil down to:

    a. He's a Freshman
    b. He's 6'7" guarding guys that have 2-5 inches on him

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

He's undersized and doesn't move his feet as well as he needs to. However, as a freshman, his defense is well beyond where it is for most kids. He needs to add about 10-15 pounds of muscle over the summer and lose some of the fat. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he's first team all-Big 12 next year.

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

I sometimes wonder if the refs 'picking on him' is a result of his reactions to previously called fouls. Seems like sometimes he over reacts to some calls and shows up the ref... moments later a bad foul is called on him.

His hands may almost always straight up but he leans entirely too much. He has to learn to get into better positions on defense.

He is a freshman! I don't understand why fouls get called when you play text book defense and have your arms straight up but I'm not worried. His defense will get better.

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

I thought in lots of games the calls were on him, but three of his five fouls yesterday were bs that should have been no calls. For some reason a Tech player threw elbows and the result was rapid fire fouls called on ISU for a few minutes. His last one was just baffling.

I think it'll improve, it's really the only thing limiting his production.

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

He's a true freshman defending guys way bigger than him on defense. If ISU ever gets a big to take him away from those types of players, he will be fine. He just needs to smarter, too.

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

The ability of the refs to have any consistency is more concerning than Georges defense. Who knew that throwing a pseudo-punch to Ejim's head is all it takes to get the refs to go on a binge of bs fouls on ISU?

He is fine when his guy has the ball. What he needs is 20 pounds of muscle so he is not so easily knocked off his spot and to avoid the "dumb" fouls.

As he matures physically (and mentally), he'll learn to foul without getting noticed- that is, play dirty.

    Re: Niangs foul trouble

He gets at least 1-2 just plain horrible calls against him a game. The refs in this conference are horrible.

If what he is getting called for are fouls then every single post player in the B1G would foul out in the 1st 5 minutes.

Big 12 refs might as well do women games.
