    Re: Obscure music selections

I would recommend checking out Divine Fits. It's a side project of a couple guys from Spoon and Wolf Parade.

You can't have obscure music without the reincarnation of Johnny Cash and his band.

The Black Angels. They sound like a band that formed after The Doors and The Velvet Underground went on a weekend long acid bender.

'D' and 'Fits'. Some of their changes absolutely mesmorize me, especially for a 4 piece (used to be 3 with looping). There's times when they're collectively going in a lot of different directions, but it comes together perfectly. Admittingly it takes a bit of time to sink in though.

Am I late on mentioning Tom Waits?

Not that it's all that obscure (although I'm still pretty sure he'd get told to pipe down if he were to show up and start playing on a corner in DT Cedar Rapids), but Andrew Bird's earlier stuff and his latest cover of Townes Van Zandt's 'If I needed you' is euphoric.

    Re: Obscure music selections

Are you talking current music or not?

One of my favorite bands is the old British group XTC. They had a few minor hits in the 80's and 90's but I would classify them mostly as obscure. As with a lot of bands I've found their earliest stuff is their most creative.

Oh, and it is definitely nerd music.

I know very little of their stuff, so I'll have to check some more out. However, Novocaine for the Soul is one of those songs that comes on and I'm instantly in a good mood. That song is the Novocaine for my soul.

Obviously Yiddish rap is underrepresented in this thread.

I had a co-worker who actually had one of their albums. It can be a little interesting if you are in the right mood.

I'd never heard of Neko Case until recently. She's great, especially Furnace Room Lullaby. Someone mentioned Divine Fits, and they're also great. Friends of Dean Martinez aren't new, but they're pretty interesting:

Now if I may get on my old man soapbox, few things irk me more than this new wave of mostly overrated ****** hipster bands playing acoustic/americana/"indie" folk/whatever music. Crap like Lumineers, Avett Brothers, and even (gasp!) Mumford and Sons is mostly just boring drivel to my ears. Just because you dress like a steamboat captain from the 19th century and sling a banjo across your shoulder doesn't make you a good artist, okay? Most of the songs I've heard are dull, and the "musicianship" is sorely lacking. Guys like New Grass Revival, Jerry Douglas, J.D. Crowe, Mark O'Connor, David Grisman, etc. can play circles around these tools, and they were doing it A) when it was actually innovative in the acoustic music world, and B) wasn't cool or mainstream. Old man out.

Reminded me of Z-Ro's song 'The Mule'. I won't post it here - NSFW.

It's a really obscure number, you've probably never heard of it.
