    National Collegiate Open

We are taking 6. All are short of the 17 D1 matches and hopefully this gets it done.

Ryak Finch, John Meeks, Luke Goettl, Max Mayfield, Boaz Beard, and Matt Gibson

How many matches does each guy need to get to 17 D1?

That's good news. Can we follow on track wrestling or will you be flying out to provide updates?

    Re: National Collegiate Open

Based on the current entries, all six of those guys would reach 17 matches as long as they win it with the possible exception of Beard. Beard needs three matches and would be in a 10 man bracket that includes two guys who are not on a D-1 roster. That kind of bracket would give a maximum of 4 matches. If Beard had 3 matches he would have to have none against one of those two. If he had 4 matches he would have to have no more than 1 against one of those two.

Registration is still open though, so if more people register today and tomorrow that would give Beard some breathing room in the bracket.

I don't know if ISU will be sending a SID, but the coaches will be there so if nothing else I'd expect twitter updates between rounds.

    Re: National Collegiate Open

Actually - given the current entries in the 184 bracket, Beard could conceivably be put into a position where he has to forfeit a semifinal match in order to get to the 17 match minimum for RPI inclusion and .700 win percentage against D-1 competition.

Unlikely that would happen, since it would require the two unrostered guys to both make it to the semifinals, but possible.

    Re: National Collegiate Open

They updated the registrations list tonight and it looks like enough matches won't be an issue for any of them. And at least one AA from last year is on the list (in Gibson's bracket). Should be some pretty good competition in the medal rounds.

I missed this thread yesterday. Great news and I hope this gets at least a few more guys into the nationals.

This tournament won't get anybody into nationals. It might help them earn bids for the Big 12, but they will still have to place accordingly at Big 12s.

    Re: National Collegiate Open

The intent of going to this tourney is to get 17 D1 matches for all the wrestlers.
This is what our guys currently have for D1 matches (according to Chip)
    Beard has 14
    Finch has 14
    Meeks has 15
    Mayfield has 16
    Gibson has 16
    Goettl has 16

Once they get to 17, they now get an RPI and another chance to recieve one of the auto berths for the Big 12's. I would think some of them will be in the top 33 in RPI and Goettl, Beard and Gibson are already ranked in the coaches poll. That would give them 2 of the requirements and a chance to earn a silver rating and an auto berth for the Big 12 tourney. I think this is correct or close to it.

That's true, but getting an allocation is a very important step towards getting to Des Moines. It's like saying 6 wins doesn't get us bowling. That's technically true but ignores the bigger pictures.

But it could be the difference between having a chance at nationals or not because it will open up those spots and greatly increase a chance of going to nationals, or increase their chance of selection if they don't place where they need. I understand this is not a qualifying tournament.

    Re: National Collegiate Open

LindenCy - I'm not sure if I am mistaking your post or not, but the Big 12 is a qualifying tourney. We aren't guaranteed that every weight will have an automatic berth (125 comes to mind, all are very close, but none are a lock).
