For those of us out of state who have to follow the game on game tracker, what was the controversy at the end?

No one knows, UNLV won't leave the field. I think they believe that there should be time left on the clock. The second to last play was reviewed with 7 seconds left, after a lot of crap to get there. They started the clock when the ball was placed, and they got the play off with 2 seconds. Incomplete pass in the end zone. Everyone left except UNLV, their coach was livid. No one really knows why. They stood around on the field for like 10 minutes with all the refs and ISU in the locker room already.

The refs really botched things up at the end. But anyway you look at it, they only had one play at the end and didn't come through on it.

Its complicated but essentially after the longest review in history for what I'm not even sure, the refs gave UNLV a few more seconds. 7 seconds to go, the clock starts running, UNLV attempts a TD pass with 0 on the clock. The receiver didn't catch it and was out of bounds anyways. The game is over. However, UNLV refused to leave claiming the reciever caught the ball and that they should be allowed to kick the PAT to win the game. But none of that happened. Their wasn't even a catch. The refs and ISU were off the field for 5 minutes before UNLV left the field. Very strange end. The refs were terrible. They shouldn't have even been able to review anything at the end because a play had already been run. MESSED UP!

We were lucky to win this.

And what's up with the refs talking to the UNLV coach the whole time they were reviewing? as Mac stays away from it all? Does any of this make any sense? This is more f-ed up than the rest of the game!

Poor execution. Poor coaching (whether play calling or getting the players ready). Very sad.

It was one of 2 things, either they thought the catch was good, or that there should still be 1 second left.

    F***! the Rebels!!

Last I heard... was that the refs didn't say the game was over... so UNLV didn't leave.

as stated in another thread... last I heard was that UNLV didn't leave the field because the refs never said the game was over.... cant guarantee 100% that's how it went down... but that's what I heard from the field when they finally started to leave.

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- UNLV players, angry that officials ruled Shane Steichen's pass into the end zone on the final play was incomplete, refused to leave the field for about 15 minutes following Iowa State's 16-10 victory Saturday night.

The Rebels congregated at midfield, yelling at officials and shaking their helmets before coaches were finally able to convince them to head to the locker room.

The bizarre sequence of events began on the game's second-to-last play, when UNLV's Casey Flair recovered his own fumble on the Iowa State 11 following a catch. The Cyclones (2-0) asked for a replay to determine whether Flair had even made the catch, but the call was upheld and the Rebels (1-1) had one last shot with 7 seconds left.

Steichen threw the ball into a gaggle of players at the back of the end zone. The players from Iowa State acted as if the game was over, but Aaron Straiten then came out of the end zone holding the ball.

Officials ruled that the pass was incomplete, setting off the protests from UNLV.
    hmmmmmmmmmmm
