    Good article about midwest recruiting

If you can put aside the Nebraska focus of this article, it has important lessons for us as well. When Dan McCarney was here, he liked to try to recruit closer to home like Tom Osborn did. And like Nebraska, we have also had to expand our recruiting range, for basically the same reasons. It may not bode well for us or other northern schools if this article is right about the geographic focus of high school and college football shifting to the south with the advent of the 'spread' and its stressing of speed over power.

It is a different world in the south as far as football is concerned. Having spring football in IA would be a huge help, but that will never happen until the state decides to do what every other state does and moves baseball to the spring.

It's a reminder why being in the Big XII is so important for us. We are the northern outpost of the conference but we still have access to southern schools via our conference affiliation.

Yes indeed. I've always seen this as a long term problem for the Cornshuckers when they jumped conferences. They are the western outpost of an mid-east based conference. They're as secluded as us, but at least we can tell the Texas kids they can play some games in their own back yard. kNU can't say that. I see them likely continuing on their slow gradual slide to mediocrity.

Re: Good article about midwest recruiting

Outside of Iowa and a little Illinois we really don't recruit the midwest that hard. I think this is the correct way of doing things because if you look at the talent in Ohio and Michigan, the two most talent rich states, the great players are heading to UM and OSU with a few sprinkled into MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin and the second tier of the Big 10. It has been and will be very hard to recruit the elite talent from those areas. I see it being very hard for Nebraska to keep up with OSU, UM and even PSU. They are removed from the that region the most and they are also removed from the south. They really don't have a "base" like those other teams do. SO then, they have to recruit like us and go up against the SEC and B12 in SEC a B12 country which has not been going well as evidenced by their TX recruiting numbers. It's all relative but to them, they expect to keep up with with the big dogs and I just don't see it happening.

Re: Good article about midwest recruiting

Is this also a problem for the lesser-storied Big Ten programs like Indiana, Northwestern, Minnesota, Iowa?

So, what's the solution? Delaney trying to somehow expand into the South? If Delaney can't pull that off, does NU send a peace delegation to the Big 12 and ask to come back?

The difference is they are focusing on different players. Like ISU, those teams you listed are largely trying to find hidden gems or other players in the south. Indiana, though has had success recruiting Indy. Like I said, Nebraska doesn't have a huge base to pull from so they are going to have to do what ever other northern non-power program does.

Nebraska had a damn good class lined up with Gabbert, Hoch, and Reiff in 08 until they went elsewhere. That group would have helped the offense immensely instead of spinning its wheels in 09/10.
