Big 12 COY for Coach Fen?

When was the last time? Or are we going to have Mulkey again?

Re: Big 12 COY for Coach Fen?

For all of the complaints that he needs to change his ways, watching the team last night I came away quite impressed with the hustle and togetherness everyone played with. Would be great to see the team finish second, and I'm glad Baylor has already been played twice so they can finish out strong.

He deserves it at this point.

Mulkey will get it again. Pretty much a lock.

Giving it to the coach who wins the league is such a cop-out, especially if that team was supposed to win.

Glad you pointed this out that "Coach of the Year" , with a few exceptions that do not include our coach, goes to who wins the conference so it's really the "The Coach of the Team that Finishes First Award" or in Mulkey's case "The Coach Who Managed to Land Griner Award". Mulkey should only get the award contingent on her winning the national title, no national title no Big 12 award!

Yeah but if they don't the voters end up looking like fools if that coach then ends up taking that team to the NC.

It's too bad that he didn't win it in 2000. He deserved it winning the regular season and tournament titles.

Wow, only 3 of those coaches are still in the league.

Completely agree - Baylor was expected to win the league, and when you are expected to win the league why does your coach deserve to be COY. COY should be the coach whose team exceeded expectations based on the predictions made during the preseason. Right now, that would be Bill or Kristy Curry.

To be far we should note that ISU coach Pam Wettig did win Big 8 Conference Coach of the Year in 1986!

3-11 to 8-6 in conference play is quite a turnaround. Too bad that is as far as the turnaround got.

Of course one could say that the fact that the expectations were that high were a testament to her coaching ability. (and her recruiting ability, which is part of being a college coach)

Of course one could say that the two key cogs in the Mulkey machine, Griner and Sims, were not recruited, signed nor matriculated this year. It is coach of the year, afterall. Coaching them up so they improve and don't have a letdown, ultimately sweeping the league, I can buy that, but I personally don't think that recruitment of players that were recruited and started playing for her 3-5 years ago comes into the equation for coach of the year.

Dont reward Baylors coach for her success just because she has high expectations.

    Good idea.

I can understand that argument as well, just saying there are many ways to look at it.

If she gets through the conference season and conference tournament totally unscathed*, I haven't seen any coaching performance that suggests that there is any way they can give it to anyone else.

I just hope Bill gets the same consideration when he gets his back to back national championships before he retires.

*BTW, don't they award it before the conference tourny is over?
