This. Is he in the mix at corner or safety for the fall, all accounts were that he is a tremendous athlete with great size.

Also CW, what happened with the decision to put Meyers at DE instead of inside, was it a depth decision or what? I thought he was pegged for interior line out of HS.

    Good article.

We'll know fairly early about this defense traveling to Tulsa. We'll either make adjustments from the bowl game debacle, or we'll get run over again

We will need George to make a huge leap forward from last year. It seems a bit scary to me having him and J Miller covering passes.

Re: BLOG: Initial impressions of Iowa State's defense in 2013

All I want is for improvement on both lines of the ball!! And I really think they are going to be better than this past years team. With a new O-line coach as well as bigger bodies on the D-line, all signs point to being better in the trenches. Already very excited for the upcoming year!!!

If you take away first base, they'll just go find a new ballpark to play in.

Re: BLOG: Initial impressions of Iowa State's defense in 2013

It does seem like two names not mentioned, redshirt freshmen, may have at least an important backup role in the secondary. Damien Lawry and Charles Rodgers both seem to have tremendous potential, especially Rodgers, and it would not be shocking to see one of these two play a very important role.

Also, would like to know more about CJ Morgan...is he still with the program?

Re: BLOG: Initial impressions of Iowa State's defense in 2013

Next year will be a rebuilding year on the DL. Woods has shown flashes with limited playing time, but can he do it play in and play out? Young guys have big potential but will need 1-2 years of experience before they dominate. Coe is a HUGE wild card...wish we had 3 of him! Irving needs to have an Epic offseason and get much stronger/better in the run game. He got exposed in the Liberty Bowl.

OL, I hope new coaching helps them out, God knows they have enough players on scholarship on that side. Time for them to get a Nasty attitude and knock some people off the ball. Tired of hearing about "what a nice, good group they are." They need to get calloused.

I've had a particular eye for this kid since he committed. Yahoo high school profile:

    6-4, 241
    4.63 / 40
    4.26 shuttle
    35" vertical jump
(and for good measure, 1550 SAT, 3.48 gpa!)

At the time, I thought, good grief, that speed and athleticism (can you be that size, run that fast, jump that high and not be athletic?) will be highly welcome on the DL.

But now, in recent days (was it in a CW article?), we've learned MM is at defensive end, and that his athleticism is not up to par for inside work.

I would have thought that his superior athleticism might have caused him to move outside, but, apparently not. MM's status, for me, is a head-scratcher. I don't understand what is happening here. . . .

We NEED this kind of athlete at DE. He may have hit a weight ceiling and they decided to keep him at DE vs. DL. Anxious too, to see what he brings!

Re: BLOG: Initial impressions of Iowa State's defense in 2013

Looks and feels like a young but promising group on both sides of the ball. Rebuilding type year and put the group of freshman and sophomores in position to do bigger things as upper classman. Hard to call it rebuilding when playing .500 football but still building maybe the better analogy. Rhoads likely wins a few you don't expect but the road to a bowl this year might be the most difficult since his first year IMO.
