    My Youngest ISU fan

My youngest son. He will be 17 on his next birthday, asked me "Why did you raise me an Iowa State fan?" That was after the game last night. I said " I used to listen to Johnny Orr coached teams with an earpiece and a radio in bed, and they lost a lot of heartbreakers too! Get used to it." I told him to pick Duke in basketball and Alabama in football and you should only have a dozen at the most losses in most years. But that would be to easy. What else should a guy with 53 years of ISU fandom experience say to him?

I remember the Chiefs and Royals winning world titles. Sorry

    Re: My Youngest ISU fan

My son, now 18, asked me that same question when he was 15. I told him that I was raised a Cyclone, my dad was raised a Cyclone, and you WILL be raised a Cyclone. He then questioned me once again and I told him that if he wanted to cheer for any other team he had better find a new place to live...nothing but silence. End of discussion.

Cyclone fan since 1964 and proud of it!

    Re: My Youngest ISU fan

Last night I was thinking about that; that life would probably be easier if I didn't cheer for Iowa State but cheered for USC or Alabama or someone like that. But at this point I couldn't cheer for anyone other than Iowa State, they're my team. If you're looking for stuff to tell him: first, it teaches you perspective. It makes every win and accomplishment that much sweeter. I don't care what an Alabama fan would say, there is no way they are as excited about winning that National Title as we would be if we won. He can take pride in the fact that he's probably a better fan than fans of teams that win all the time because they don't have to suffer heartbreak. Finally, he can look other sports fans in the eye and have respect. I personally don't have much respect for bandwagon fans. If you have a connection to a team or the area, great be a fan of that team. But if you choose to be a fan of a team BECAUSE they win...that's weak.

    Re: My Youngest ISU fan

My father graduated from Alabama and raised us all to be Crimson Tide fans. We moved to Iowa when I was in first grade, and later on I went to Iowa State. My loyalty was never tested until that 2001 Independence Bowl. I found out during that game that I cared much more for ISU than for Alabama. I am a loyal son forever true, hit it hard, and all that.

He is 16... He should be able to figure it out on his own.

And when he does figure it out. It will make him a better fan. Or just send him to ISU for college, then he'll have little choice in the matter.

Exactly. I honestly wasn't much of a fan of many college sports growing up, but I claimed Florida State because I was born in Florida.

Then I went to Iowa State from 05 - 09. Never have I felt more connected to a team, & that will never change.
