    Why are women always on a diet?

    I know there are some ladies on this forum so I have a serious question for you.

    In my office all the women (aged 28-50ish) are on a diet seemingly all the time. They do Zumba and other stuff (according to them) yet they never lose any weight. Are all their metabolisms really that bad or are they lying to themselves?

    I've got one coworker who says she needs to lose about 20 pounds so she cooks healthy and does Zumba but hasn't lost any weight. On the other hand, I eat pizza and fast food about 5 times per week and I lost 15 pounds just by not snacking and quitting alcohol for a bit.

    I find that their "diets" and "workouts" are more social than intended for any real tangible benefit. Those of you still in college may not notice it, but I bet the older males working with women have noticed this.

    Can one of you wonderful ladies please enlighten me?! Thanks!!

    because they do zumba once a week for one hour and then have a cheat day where they consume 10X the calories burned in zumba. It isnt a "diet" if you do it for years, it is just eating.

    That's probably it. Or theyre vastly underestimating the calories in foods theyre eating. They'll eat things that are 'low fat', but those things still pack on the calories (which gets turned into fat) despite having low fat content.

    Calories in - calories out is all that matters if they want to lose weight (with the biggest factor usually being cals in, as it takes 1 bad food choice to undo an hour at the gym). If they arent losing weight, theyre probably eating too many calories.

    Maybe they are Norwegians and have an ultra slow metabolism and not a tape worm.

    I have found that women, not all and not exclusively women, tend to treat themselves more when it comes to diet and exercise. I'm constantly hearing in my office, "I worked out this morning, sure I'll go out for lunch." When in reality, that 20 minutes on the eliptical at the lowest setting, didn't really knock off the calories they thought it did. It seems as well that women get more emotional about eating than most men I know. Not that one is any better than the other, but most of my male friends splurge because we like a certain food's taste. The women I know, will splurge because they had a bad day at work.

    In the end, I think it has a lot to do with reaching that ideal female form presented by magazines and models. I've worked in graphic design for years and done loads of retouching. Hell, not only do models not really look like their pictures, most of their pictures don't look that way until the blemishes have all been removed, we've thinned out the thighs and the waist and added some color to their flesh tone. Women are under more pressure than men to look a certain way.

    I was out to dinner with some friends and this one lady told me she was on a diet. She was eating a giant slab of pizza and I asked her how many calories she thought was in the piece of pizza, she said probably 10.

    Most of what you guys said contribute to unhealthy dieting and outlook on their lives.

    Some great reasons:
    1. They do not understand portion size
    2. They do not understand how much exercise verses intake they can do
    3. Women are emotional. Sometimes they can't break bad habits like eating junk food when sad, grieving....
    4. Some women think they can diet for a little bit and it'll work. (I think it's a way of life change)
    5. They don't track what they eat or do not track the types of food they eat. It really opens their eyes.

    For maybe a healthier woman it could be she has reached a weight loss plateau. For that you have to experiment to see what changes will work.

    Well, one reason is they care more about their weight than men. There are plenty fat men but they aren't as likely to attempt, or at least talk, about doing something about it.

    Another is they have a higher fat percentage, and fat contains more calories per pound. Men lose more muscle when they exercise and don't eat as much, so that weight goes faster.

    Also, they just can't cut out as much easy stuff as men since they eat less to begin with.

    if you eat you are on a diet. your diet is anything you eat, so guess what? you are on a diet as well.

    Ignoring the gender, "diets" are dumb because they imply something temporary. If you want have a healthier diet, you need to resign yourself to a permanent lifestyle change. The idea of "I'll just do this for a little while and then things will be 'back to normal'" is just setting yourself up for failure. Promulgating myths about how easy it is to lose weight and get healthy has the same effect; it makes a person feel defeated if they've "only" dropped 5 pounds in a month.

    It's also fascinating and irritating how many people diet purely for vanity (i.e., they don't want to look fat), and how few people accompany their new diet with an exercise regimen.

    Typically, i think they naturally have less muscle and more fat, so it is far easier to gain weight.

    There's a double standard when it comes to size. Guys are usually called big rather than fat, so there's less pressure. Also, women pay a lot more attention to fashion, etc where bone pile women tend to be the norm. They also compare themselves to other women all the time- I think they check out women more than men do sometimes.
