I'm giving up Alcohol & Pop, but instead of lent I'm just doing it for the month of February. Shortest month gives me a fighting chance of it stickin.....I really want a beer right now.

It's about bettering yourself as a person. There's nothing silly about that. I don't even look at it in a religious way.

If you don't continue it after the 40 days, the "bettering" is minimal.

    How about ......
    a) saying a rosary each day.
    b) visiting the sick in local hospitals
    c) volunteer at church services.
    d) attend the stations of the cross.
    e) Pray for a friends special concerns.

Just make sure you remember which cup is which. You don't want to take a swig of your spit cup thinking it's a delicious Pepsi.

You see, you just need to build in exceptions along the way. As in "I'm giving up alcohol for Lent, with the exception of the Big 12 tourney. And if the Clones advance throughout the NCAA tournament."
