Twister Sister Summary - Ladies win another in a game of halves...

Its been a long day in Cyclone land. We just got home after spending Friday- Saturday in Ames for Beauty and the Beast and then the women’s game today before hanging out with friends to watch the men play KState.

Where to start? This is one of those game that it is best to talk about by halves. Yes, one of those.

Let me say that KState is a team that is struggling just to get through the season. They are down to seven total players after several injuries and none over 5’ 11” tall. They are led by Brittany Chambers and this is a young lady that is fun to watch. You would think this would be a recipe to go inside and go there often. It was. The first half was all about our bigs doing their thing surrounded by a smattering of outside shots and the traditional 3 pointers that the sisters are known for. There was a very clear difference in the two teams in the first half and the ladies in red could pretty much do what they pleased throughout the first 20 minutes.

What was it like? By the half, the ladies had dished out 21 assists. That’s more than we usually get in a single game let alone a half. There was the 20+ rebound margin. There was a team that was shooting over 60% and much of the half hovering near 70%. There was Pop sitting with 20 points and double digit rebounds. Moody would have double digit assists. Could you really complain about anything? The only nit pick I could make was one that would get worse in the second half – missed bunnies. Only a few in the first half, but the opportunities were there. My wife turned to me a couple of times when the sisters held a 20 point lead and said she felt like the lead should be bigger. Why wasn’t it? The aforementioned Ms. Chambers was a big part of it. This young lady has shouldered this team and she is good. She is quick to the basket and has a sweet shot from deep. Even with Brynn hounding her she got her points. Between her and White they kept KState from being completely blown out. Perhaps the worst play of the half occurred in the last 3 seconds when State was called for a foul as Chambers was throwing up a desperation 3 pointer at the buzzer. That really was it. Everything else was running on all cylinders. Halftime score was an impressive 51-29. Think about it…that’s sometimes twice the points we score in a half.

During the half I mentioned to my wife that I expected the starters to be in for about five minutes and then we would see lots of subs for the remainder of the game. Boy, was I wrong.

Its not that uncommon for a team that has so dominated a first half to come out a little flat. Our sisters not only came out flat offensively, but the defense was even worse. Of course you have to give KState credit. They kept fighting and man did they make things interesting. Chambers would go on to score 34 points with many of those coming from the free throw line this half. As she pushed we just seemed a step slow and kept fouling her. White put in 25 of her own and that’s all there was to the KState team. You would think focus would allow a team to slow them down, but it sure didn’t happen. Several times they actually trimmed our lead to under 20 points. Fortunately someone always stepped up. It was usually Hal. She was able to turn on the jets when others couldn’t find the basket if they were given a ladder. Pop would only score 2 points after the half. Prins wouldn’t score period. Ellis? Nothing. The guard court…just enough to help keep KState at bay. Those subs? Never saw the court. It ended up being a game of 7 on 7 for this entire game and fortunately we had that big lead because KState outscored us by 6 in the second stanza. People literally walked away with a bad taste in their mouth knowing that this team should have blown KState out of the water. If they play as they did in the second half in very many games it will spell disaster. But enough of the Debbie Downer. It was another Big 12 win and scoring 87 points is pretty impressive right? Giving up 71 not so much. Outside of Kansas in OT, no one…not even mighty Baylor scored that many points on the sisters. That should be a wake up call in practice this week.

Again, I have to name Hal as the player of the game. She was one of the few that played two solid halves. With our posts struggling to even hit iron on layups at times in the second, Hal was moved to the post and ate the smaller KState players for lunch. She hit a great 11-17 from the field and scored 25. Add to that, she was signing autographs after the game!

Thanks to a strong first half, Moody ended up with 13 assists…3 short of the school record set by Ms. Medders. With even a decent second half by the players she was feeding and the record would have been gone. Add this stat..2 turnovers. Nice!

Three pointers. The team was cooking from deep today. Prins and Ellis were the only two players not to make one. Each one seemed to be critical and demoralizing to the KState faithful.

Other things you would expect to happen. Dominate on the boards? Yep (+19). Hit free throws? Sure (90%). Good assist to turnover ratio? Absolutely (29:11). And by the way…35 was the single game record in case you were wondering.

So, this game gave the crowd a little bit of everything and in the end was a victory. Even better? Where the ladies finish in the Big 12 is in their hands. They stand tied with TTech in 3rd at 8-4 with a big game against OU (7-3) coming up next week. Also of import is the remaining schedule is definitely in their favor if they keep playing well. Fun times!

One thing I did forget to mention and it was a whopper. One thing that is always a constant in a Sisters game is the monster effort that Pop always puts in. Her motor never stops. It was quite evident with the 18 boards she got on top of the 22 points. Even when the scoring stopped in the second half...the rebounds didn't.

I'd agree that Pop missed some shots in the second half that she would usually make -- but hey, it's a good bet she was just worn out. Given the huge first half production. Given her persistent attacking the boards. Given her defense, sometimes chasing the small White inside and outside. Given the somewhat surprising limited playing time for Anna. Something had to take a hit, and it was probably just being a little mentally or physically tired to keep her shot on track.

The main reason KSU stayed in the game in the second half was through free throws. They got them, and ISU did not. One could argue that they were attacking inside and we were not. But that isn't quite accurate. There were several times ISU went up for inside shots and did not get the benefit of a whistle, whereas any bump by ISU on the defensive ended seemed to result in a whistle. Some of the bumps were ISU out of position, but many of the bumps were KSU initiating some contact. I am a big fan of the new rules that are intended to cut down on the mugging style of defense and allow offenses to function. However, a player should be allowed to play defense when someone is driving. The alternative is to step aside and let them go to the basket. Is that good basketball? But ISU was "forced" to do that a few times to avoid getting the foul call. The other alternative is to mug them to try to bully the offense into submission, and ISU does not play that style of ball. In this game, the refs often let KSU run into our defense, sometimes dribbling out of control, and get the foul call and go to the line. So I chalk up quite a bit of the 2nd half scoring by KSU to the way the game was called -- KSU got free throws or easy layups.

Looks like she is back to her double-double self. If she can continue to stay healthly and out of foul trouble we can go from good to very good as a team. After several team turnover and foul plagued games I was thinking 10-8 but will have to happily eat that if we get to 12-6.

I rarely complain about the refs, but I agree with much of this; it seems that the refs in the second half decided to call a different kind of game, at least where our defense was concerned. It appeared to me that any Cyclone that got within a foot of Chambers in the second half was called for a foul, whereas our big people in the second half were bumped on inside moves that were not called. KState shot 27 foul shots, we shot 10 for the game.

I also think, because we have no bench, injury would be disastrous to this team. I think Fennelly is constantly concerned and coaches around his short supply of players. Therefore, I think our offense changed to a certain extent and wasn't as aggressive. It was more like, let us try to maintain the lead, and not take any risks. I would be very tempted to do the same were I coach.

How'd those refs get from Hilton down to Bramlege for the men's game so fast?

The refs had clones? Too bad they weren't cyclones. Bad joke, I know.
