Re: Things You Completely Didn't Understand As a Child

If by "not completely understand" you mean "have no f***ing clue", then I have one that sticks out to me. We had a lot of helicopters fly over our farm, it was the reserves in training, also known as "weekend warriors". At one point my Dad told me they were on training missions and were preparing for real battles. Which to me meant they would pepper me with aircraft fire is they didn't identify me as a friendly. So I hid in the ditch for five years if I happened to be outside when they flew over.

Re: Things You Completely Didn't Understand As a Child

When I first started learning cuss words and a young lad the first big ones I learned were the S word and the F word. For a long time I didn't even know what they meant, just that they were bad. Eventually I learned from friends what they meant but for a while I had them mixed up and would use them incorrectly.

I guess that should read "for five years, I hid in the ditch if I happened to be outside when they flew over".

I didn't actually hide in a ditch for five years. I'm not THAT stupid.

When I was really young and we would travel for the holidays, I would always wait for an area of blackness. I thought the map of the USA was a photo taken from space and black lines were painted on the earth to show state borders.

I was around five or six when Ken Burns' Civil War series came out on PBS. I remember seeing all the black and white photos and asking my dad when color was invented. SMH.

I was pretty little and my older brother convinced me that if he put salt in my iced drink the ice would stick to my teeth forever. I didn't understand that ice melted yet

The difference between a "storm watch" and a "storm warning".

Still don't. IMHO those are more confusing terms than Leaders and Legends.

My parents were going to Davenport, IA and I was disappointed when they didn't bring back a new couch.

Ace Ventura was my favorite movie when I was young...I just had no idea what gonorrhea was and I would tell my friends, family members etc...that they should die of gonorrhea whenever they did something bad. Never knew why my mom would get so mad when I said that...

All coming from that old women in Ace Ventura saying, "Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell..."

Re: Things You Completely Didn't Understand As a Child

One of the few things I remember from the time I was between 2-3 probably because I was so disappointed. My aunt lived in Cedar Rapids and I thought my parents were saying "we're going to see the rabbits". A four hour car drive and I didn't see any rabbits.

When I went to my first Kansas City Royals game, I asked my parents when we would get to see the Queen of England.
