Thanks for reading title, clicking it, and posting this.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

I wish I could grow a garden. I basically live in a desert.

I don't live in Iowa, but here in Springfield I absolutely hate the "front yard gardens" here. Walking dogs sucks along the sidewalks, everyone puts the tall grass 2 feet from the sidewalk, feels like I am walking in a corn field at times.

Doesn't the person who wants to grow a garden in front law bare any responsiblity for choosing to live in a city that is probably going to care more about manicured lawns that sustainable gardening?

It is like someone living in Ankeny complaining they have to pay for yet another new elementary school. Guess what? You chose to live in a city that is popular with families with kids.

    Move.

    Problem solved.

I agree. If you don't like front yard gardens, move.

Just curious, but what's the problem with a front yard garden? This law doesn't sound like it was conceived in the "Land of the Free" if you ask me.

And... uh... if WDM makes the law after the front yard gardener has made it their home, why are you holding the gardener to blame? Sounds like it's currently perfectly legal to do it right now.

I'm not blaming the gardener for anything other than realizing where you chose to live comes with consequences.

Plenty of cities that would embrace this type of thing. Why stay in one that doesn't?

A resident raised the issue, it hasn't been enacted yet, so why move before voicing your opinion?

City council member Kevin Trevillyan said he didn’t think the ordinance is something he is “comfortable pursuing.”“I understand your concern and frustrations…but I struggle with where do you draw the line on property owner rights that say here’s what you can and can’t do on your own property?” Trevillyan said.
Mayor Steve Gaer who is filling in on the subcommittee until a new city council member is elected later this month, recommended bringing the ordinance to a meeting so all city council members could be a part of the discussion. Gaer asked staff to come up with more specific alternatives, such as a size limitation and to look at whether other cities have similar ordinances.
“Fortunately we’ve only had one or two complaints, but if it’s next to you it’s an issue,” Gaer said

Some vegetables can make very nice ornamentals. I like to use sweet potato (a member of the morning glory family) as a flowering ground cover plant.

If it isn't overgrown, then what's the big deal?
