    Used cell phone question

My sons need a new cell and he is not close to upgrading on his contract. He is with US Cellular. Question- There are lot of used phones on Craigslist, if there anyway to verify that a given phone will work with a specific (US Cellular) provider?

If you take it to a US Cellular store will they verify it for you?

    Re: Used cell phone question

It has to be a US Cellular phone or be "unlocked". I've never had any experience with an unlocked phone but you may also have to get a Sim Card for it. Best bet is to just buy a phone that was previously used with US Cellular.

I'd trust ebay a little more than craigslist because you can at least somewhat verify the history of the seller. I've sold several used phones on ebay in the past but I've never bought one on there.

I bought one on ebay once (Verizon, though). It worked perfectly fine.

    Re: Used cell phone question

I'm a used phone reseller so I have a lot of experience here. If you want to stick with US Cellular, you'll want to get a US Cellular phone, as unlocked phones won't work with them. All you need to do when you buy the phone off Craigslist is to check the ESN. This is a number that's usually under the battery of the phone. Then you can just give a local US Cellular store a call and have them check that number to make sure it is OK to be activated. You may have to call a couple different stores as sometimes you get an employee that doesn't feel like helping.
