IMO Clyburn had the 5 second call.
This is true. In high school they really emphasize the full six feet. I college you just about have to be in the guy's shorts to get a count.

Which usually leads to a foul call before the 5-sec call is made...

I just finally saw a replay. Didn't have the world's best angle (from behind) but by my count he was close enough to touch him for a full 13 seconds.

Yeah, well, what do you know? You are a ref and last night we all saw that they can't see and they can't count.

Gosh I don't know if I should post anymore. The game was yesterday, after all, time to let it go.

But just in case anyone might still be interested, it is the video linked to today's blog by Randy Peterson:

    Single Video Player

Hard to tell exactly when he crosses halfcourt but I started my stop watch basically as soon as he is actively guarded at about the 5 second mark of the video.

I count a minimum of 10 seconds....I was screaming for it on my couch. I'm sorry but it doesn't matter what building you're in, he was basically in his shorts for 8 of those 10 seconds; you have to make that call.

Re: Where was the 5 second call on OSU's last possession?

Honestly, I can't bring myself to get worked up over what should have been a 5-second call, by rule. That rule is officiated so poorly, it's almost an afterthought and hard to take seriously. It barely crosses my mind unless I know there is an whistle-happy ref on the court.

My beef is with that horse---- foul on Ejim with 1:15ish left and ISU up 3. At the very least it was ISU ball, if not a fast break opportunity after the block/rebound. Of course, had Ejim's brain not shut off when he grabbed that defensive rebound around 1:50 with ISU up 4, we would have won the game, so... there's just a whole lot of fail that still has me in a bad mood.

Wow, Clyburn was tight on him the whole time! Now, I'm mad about that call too (makes up for the one rux made me give up this morning!). Of course, I don't really expect them to make that call at the end of the game. As I recall, I was even yelling for Clyburn to back off rather than play him so tightly so far from the hoop. It wasn't until I got on CF that it dawned on me that he had earned the 5-second call.

Not to mention the borderline illegal screen to break him free from Clyburn after the 10 seconds of dribbling around with no penetration toward the hoop and Clyburn being close enough to grab his jersey if he wanted to. I agree, it doesn't matter where you are or at what point you are in the game, that must be called. Situations like that don't usually happen until late in the game when teams are trying to burn clock.....it's what this rule is for. If it's not going to be called, take it out of the book.

I bet KU would get that call if we tried doing that at Hilton.

I taped the game and you can see how closely Smart was guarded even better on that. The official had about 5 seconds after the original 5 second call should have been made to make the call. He totally blew it.

Re: Where was the 5 second call on OSU's last possession?

For me, I just find it hard to believe how crummy the B12 bball refs are in games. High schools refs can put out better product. The old B12 commissioner should work at getting his refs better trained.
