Honest question, couldn't we just hire Kaffey then fire him after Vaughn leaves in a year?

I would be upset if we hired someone who plead guilty for aggravated robbery. Also, if they used a gun to pistol whip some dude, is that not considered armed robbery? Or are aggravated robbery and armed robbery the same thing? Either way, I would rather not have a felon on our team.

    Re: Rashad Vaughn

The story does a very poor job of proving anything, lots of assertions in it - which make it pretty poor in my opinion. My feeling is that Kaffey probably is looking to further his career. I'm not going to suggest that he's a scumball like the article tries to portray him. I know nothing about Kaffey's background other than what is mentioned in the story, but is he even a college graduate? I don't think the University would hire a non-graduate even as an assistant. Kaffey is an assistant at Findlay, so I'm not sure that his history as an assistant at Robinsdale Cooper and at Findlay really qualify the guy for much of a position at Iowa State either.

I would imagine that Rashad's parents are also going to have an opinion as to his recruitment in the end, and doubt that they'd persuade him to go to a certain school simply because of a 'job' in the college ranks for Kaffey.

I still think Rashad really wants to be a Cyclone.

realistically, I think a more plausible scenario is that this mentor was a 20 year old kid, had missed out on his hoop dreams, and decided to latch onto an obviously talented 8th grader. Him going out to Las Vegas, based on his mentors advice and connections, seems to support it. He didn't need the different stage, he had the offers, so why go out there? Separating a high school kid from his family seems unnecessary. You could argue that it was to get him away from some other bad influences, but why UNLV then? Maybe not technically UNLV, but that prep school is nothing more than a feeder institution. these, at least to me, support something more nefarious at play. And common with the big boys or not, there is a price to pay when you associate with that recruiting method.

I would love for Vaughn to come to ISU more than ever now. But if it involves a "mentor" coming on staff I think that it may not be worth it. He has a very good mentor, in all facets of life, waiting for him in Ames.

Regardless of the story, CFH knows the truth. He has met the man and judged the situation. He will make the right call under what is best for Rashard and Cyclones men's bb. And if we get him or not, the truth will find light. If his mentor goes on staff wherever Vaughn ends up, we know the sticker price.

    (Horribly formatted by iPad.)
There is evidence that playing against other elite competition daily like you do at these preps better prepares you to make the jump to D-1 basketball on day 1 which is important to becoming a lottery pick. Look at how Thomas has struggled at adjusting as he isnt as used to playing guys as big and skilled as him. Niang had that experience at Brewster as did Ejim and they both were better prepared for it. Especially niang as he had to learn how to operate against one of the best post talents in the country and manuever against bigger more athletic guys. You could argue that is what made him great. Given this is what vaughn said when he went he bought into that idea, it wasnt about getting noticed but about getting better.

You are a little late to the party. Read the last couple of pages of posts.

Quite the opposite. Now we got fans back-peddling on his recruitment.....

    This thread never gets old.

For as large a role as Kaffey is playing in his recruitment, I think a 7000+ post thread deserves at least a little discussion that may include some scrutinization. Naz Long played at Findlay, so anyone here saying we shouldn't take RV because of that oddity of a school should kindly remove themselves from the conversation.

I think it may be a little clearer if Baylor is on the final 5 list that perhaps Kaffey IS trying to get an in. Of all the schools mentioned, either they or Kentucky, I would think, would be most likely to be involved in a shady deal. Purely wild speculation of course.

    Re: Rashad Vaughn

Its a real question of where you draw the line as a program. The problem is NCAA recruiting is slimy, and moreso the more elite the recruits get. If youre not at least recruiting in the gray area, you're going to have trouble recruiting against those who are fully across the line, and be assured that plenty are well across the line. So that brings the question... what is acceptable? What rules do you really care if we bend, given the NCAA rules around recruiting are a joke at best, as is the enforcement of those rules?
