Edward Kemboi, Iowa State, 1:47.43, School Record

All-American Edward Kemboi of Iowa State ran 1:47.43 to win the 800m at the Bill Bergan Invitational on January 26, 2013. He outdistanced fellow all-American Harun Abda from Minnesota and broke ISUís school record in the process. I couldnít find a place to shoot correctly today, so the video is a little shaky. Enjoy!

Thanks for posting that, Phil. As a former half-miler myself I think track and cross-country doesn't get enough coverage considering ISU's history.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldnít get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

I agree. Some of the kids on the team have a vague notion of how awesome ISU XC and Track was in the 80's and 90's, but they're unsure because there isn't very much media at their fingertips for them to see for themselves. And their coach, a legend himself, is too humble to say a word about his own conquests.
When I won Drake in the 1600m as a high schooler 20 years ago (1993), I got scholarship offers from a bunch of schools. ISU wasn't one of them. I wasn't a blip on their radar. They were that good. To get money for school, you likely had to run 1:49 for 800, 4:00 for the mile, and basically be immediate all-American material at any other distance. They were the Alabama of XC and track back then! ROLL CYCLONES!!!!!

Wait...you're not a hairy overweight dude who rocks a wifebeater?

Awesome to hear about Kemboi's half. That's blazing! I hated running the half myself. Worst race in existence.

Great for him. I used to roll with his uncle, Ben Kemboi. Kind of a recluse, but who could blame him after all the trouble he'd seen. Shame the way he passed away so suddenly. There wasn't much left of him. Even so, he got that tractor beam shut down, and we all were able to escape. I miss him. It's hard, but sometimes it's like he's still with me, you know?
