Re: Favorite Golf Course in DSM

I agree that Legacy is the best track, especially given the reasonable price.

I see Countryside as the worst, and it definitely is close at this point. Countryside is a cautionary tale in regard to how well a course is maintained. When it first opened (and properly cared for), it was a fun little course.

It is no different than any CC in the world. Members feel they own the place and don't want outsiders to walk the same ground they do.

If that is supposed to be shot at DMG or myself you obviously don't know what you are talking about.

Yup, because when someone disagrees or has a differing opinion on something then obviously they don't know what they are talking about.

Not the point. DMG turned down the tournament because just like Glen Oaks the members did not want it. The only tournaments they would ever host are USGA events.

You nailed it-too much hassle for a very small payout- even though it benefits charity. And like any other club,it's about revenue. And you are correct about events-still talk about a Women's U.S. Open someday. But it has to be a very good event for the membership to go for it.

Well they kind of do own the place.....doesn't mean they have to be dicks though. I played dmgcc last summer and everyone was nice and the course was tough and fun.

A guy can get dizzy looking down to the gren from the tee box. Great course. I do worry about long term viability. I've heard they're broke and have to offer insane deals ($20...all you can play, for example) just to get people out there. They should be able to charge $50+, but they just don't get any traffic because it's in the middle of nowhere.
Exactly. Only reason I played it was because of the $20 Groupon which got me 18 holes and cart. Never would have thought of it otherwise.

The bottomline, you pay good money for membership at a CC to have exclusive access to a top-notch course & facilities. When a CC hosts a tourney each year, it knocks members off the course for a couple weeks. That is seen as a big negative.

Woodland Hills. Simply because it gives you great options for post game festivities - Outer Limits, Lumberyard

Otter Creek was in the best condition of any metro course by the end of the year. It's maturing beautifully. Talons of Tuscany was a blast. But I love the city courses variety and value.
Toad unfortunately was a disaster this year. I got green fees for free and felt that I paid too much. Copper is a great layout, but was trashed this year.

My personal opinion is that we are blessed to have a lot of good public courses to choose from to play. You can go to a different course each week and never get tired of the same track week after week. Have not played much in Ames, but would like to try the courses up there. (played Veenker)
