Big 12 in talks with ACC and 2 other conferences about an alliance

Almost to the point of a merger but not quite with TV and in marketing place

    • kbohls ‏@kbohls Bowlsby said such an alliance would not be precursor to future expansion, "if anything the opposite."

The Pac-12 almost certainly one of the other two leagues the Big 12 is discussing an alliance with, could involve more sports than fb, bkb.

Bowlsby told me "nothing is imminent" but the leagues involved have had "multiple discussions" about the potential partnership.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says league is exploring alliance with ACC, two other leagues for scheduling, marketing, TV and bowls.

Wasnt the PAC talking to the big 12 about potential alliances before it attempted to break it up. I see something similar with the B12\ACC...

Re: Big 12 in talks with ACC and 2 other conferences about an alliance

There was a similar rumor on a Texas site a few days, but with the alliance accompanying FSU and Miami or Clemson to the Big 12. At first thought it may be meh, but it makes quite a bit of sense when you consider the dynamics. The Big 12 has some need to expand, but does not want to reduce the $/member. FSU and Miami (or maybe Clemson) as #11 and #12 would not reduce pay in the Big 12's match-up based business model, but those schools will only come with a block of other SE schools. Such alliance would be to allow FSU and Clemson to play the ACC teams, without the Big 12 having to go to 16.

This concept, one without FSU and Miami/Clemson moving, is interesting. In a way, it could almost be the initiation of the concept of the BIG going to 20, where you essentially have an overall TV league composed of the close association of two conferences. Or it could (likely) go how all the rest of these things have gone- a glorified "conference-challenge" that fizzles out. Personally, I'd rather help unravel the ACC teams and then couple ourselves with the SEC.

Re: Big 12 in talks with ACC and 2 other conferences about an alliance

The Big 12 is a bad fit for the Florida ACC schools unless 6 of them join. 6 ACC teams to the Big 12 makes sense. 1 or 2 dos not.

The states are all far away (Texas, OK, IA, KS, WV) not only geographically but culturally. 2 ACC schools are not leaving what they already have just so they can send their athletic programs to play in Manhattan Kansas.

2 of them won't be enough thats not going to happen and the 2 schools will feel isolated. The Big 12 will have to go to 16. And it won't happen until the SEC or B1G poaches 2 ACC schools first. If/when that happens expect a 16 team Big 12 with 6 ACC teams joining.

Yeah, they already hate being in the same conference as far away schools like Syracuse, Pitt, and Boston College.
ACC schools are far away, geographically and culturally, from the BIG too. The former "Voice of UVa" was on an Atlanta radio station discussing how UVa does not want to have to send their lacrosse team to Des Monies. Interestingly, Miami is farther away than DSM. He did not even know how far away Iowa was, just that in his mind it was far, far away. Or where the Big 10 university was located.

If 2 ACC team come to Big 12, they could go back to 12 and each conf would have 12. (ND mucks it up, but I think they go with Catholic 7 eventually) and ACC will replenish anyone else with Big East teams.

Great points that are almost always forgotten. When the last ACC moves happened of Syracuse and Pitt I looked up and found that Syracuse is about as far or further for Miami and FSU than any Big 12 team would be. Pitt isn't much better. I guess since then the Big 12 has helped them by getting rid of New Jersey which has always been further away than the Big 12.

I agree they won't come alone, but one or three other schools would do more than enough to make their travel the same as going to Syracuse, Boston and Pitt all the time...and let's be realistic, FSU and Miami are going to be headed to UConn at some point for conference games too if they stay in the ACC.

Re: Big 12 in talks with ACC and 2 other conferences about an alliance

A "scheduling alliance" is cute and all, but I'm pretty sure ISU already has one with Iowa. Just because the rest of the conference can't get passed their petty ******** and play their actual rivals on a yearly basis doesn't mean that ISU should be saddled with some meaningless game against some garbage opponent like NC State, Wake, Duke, UNC, etc.

I think this is right on target. Pesonally I do not want to see the Big 12 go to 16, which would probably mean Iowa State in a Big 12 East division with 6 AAC schools and (probably) Kansas. Unless the money is sooo good we absolutely cannot turn it down.

Why not? It would be like being in the old Big 12, except better- a similar presence in Florida, where we actually have more players from the Texas. Florida or Texas- it does not matter as much as staying in a division with like schools (athletically)- KU, KSU, WVU, TT, etc.

If the ACC TV contracts suck, then how would a B12/ACC alliance be beneficial to the B12?

An alliance with the Pac 12 would be interesting however.
