23 wins is the magic number?

    Jan 26 W 14-5 (4-2)
    Jan 30 L 14-6 (4-3)
    Feb 2 W 15-5 (5-3)
    Feb 4 W 16-5 (6-3)
    Feb 9 L 16-6 (6-4)
    Feb 13 W 17-6 (7-4)
    Feb 16 W 18-6 (8-4)
    Feb 20 L 18-7 (8-5)
    Feb 23 W 19-7 (9-5)
    Feb 25 W 20-7 (10-5)
    Mar 2 L 20-8 (10-6)
    Mar 6 W 21-8 (11-6)
    Mar 9 W 22-8 (12-6)

Hypothetically, win one game in the Big 12 tournament to finish 23-9.. What do you guys think? I think that officially puts us on the last 4 in, and competing in the play-in game.. 20 wins is not what is used to be in that it was the number you needed to make the tournament. Especially when you have one top ten win over KU at home, and one loss against a RPI 240...

We're gonna drop 1 or two games at home. Other than that, looks pretty accurate to me.

10 before the game would have been enough, with the Tech loss though that's 2 wins they need to make up. imo
It would help if one of those wins was KU.

On Jan. 30th, you have us losing to OK ST. leaving us at 14-6 to Feb 2nd where we win and go 15-5. Not sure if this screws up your numbers on us getting int he tourney or now, but the final record would be 22-9 if you go back and count the OK St. game as a loss. It seems to have been dropped from your numbers.

How many conference tournament games have we won in the last five years?

While the above is POSSIBLE, losing the next 5 may be just as likely given the effort we saw last night.

I've been saying 11 wins in the conference does it but after last night, we may need to get a game in the Big 12 Tourny to feel safe.

Re: 23 wins is the magic number?

Does this team want to be good enough to do that. Before last night they controled their own fate. Sweep the bottom 5, split with the top 4 and they are in. That was a bad loss if this team falls to 4th or 5th in the conference there is a good shot they dont get in.

This team has the abality to win a lot of games yet. Do they have the want. Last few games they havnt had the want. Hell last night all they had to do was get 3 more rebounds with a put back and they win. Instead they all stood around the 3 point line when a shot went up, while Tech had 4 and 5 guys hitting the boards.

Thanks.. Good call.. Either way doesn't change the number of 23.. I firmly believe that is the only way this team gets in.. As other posters have said above, it's all about the effort from here on out. If they act like they don't care, this season is over. If they play like they did against KU we can make a run. It all starts with Korie and his leadership ability. The last effort where we had two timeouts and all the better we got was Korie and Will running around lost and shooting a contested three was brutal. I can't imagine that is what Fred drew up.

It doesn't matter how much sugar you try to pour in the Koolaid. In the end we're just going to spit it out and look forward to next year.

Re: 23 wins is the magic number?

23 should definitely do it. I'd say a 10-8 record in the Big 12 with a win over Kansas and a quality road win like an Okie State or K-State would also get us in. IMO 23 wins with a 12-6 conference record puts us as an 8 or 9 seed. We will only be last four in if we only have 21 or so wins IMO.

Re: 23 wins is the magic number?

There seems to be a misconception that there is some magic total number of wins (22,23,24) that will get ISU into the tournament. The number is not nearly as important as who the wins are against and where those wins took place. If the scenerio the OP presents played out, ISU would finish the year with 0 road wins against Top 100 teams. Couple that with the sub 200 loss last night and you have a very shaky resume. Just last year there were a few Pac 12 teams with 24 wins and very good conference records, 13-5 or so, that were left out due to no quality road wins and a couple bad losses.

Re: 23 wins is the magic number?

Although the season has gone exactly as I thought it would so far I know longer feel we need 23 to make NCAA. The bubble is weak and even with a loss at Texas Wednesday we fall to a 12-13 seed. I do not feel good about this team on the road so a loss Wednesday would not surprise me.

What are your guys thoughts on how the season must go the rest of the way for us to make the tourney?
