How is KU vs Texas game on CBS?

I've noticed that this happens occasionally, but how is the KU vs Texas game broadcasted on CBS? It is my understanding that our first tier rights are owned by ABC/ESPN, our second tier rights are owned by Fox, and our 3rd tier rights go to the individual schools. If this is the case, how does CBS get any Big 12 conference regular season games? Did ABC or Fox maybe sell the game off to CBS or did we sell rights to a few basketball games to CBS? Please don't say the same thing happened with the WVU game vs Purdue because that game is at Purdue and under the Big 10's contract.

I think CBS gets a few games a year from the conference. Not exactly sure what the agreement is.

This is my guess too, but not sure. If that is the case, I'm not sure how they rank in the priorority of their picks, but I'm guessing it is relatively high with their few picks. I know CBS does not get any football games.

Re: How is KU vs Texas game on CBS?

According to the big 12 website ESPN has the right to license games to CBS.

TV Agreement Leads To More Hoops Exposure - Big 12 Conference - Official Athletic Site

The new agreement increases the number of televised games from 95 to 105 while also significantly increasing exposure. The Big 12 is guaranteed to have 30 conference games receive national exposure on ESPN and its platforms, plus an additional 13 games which can be Conference or non-conference matchups (ESPN has the right to sub-license games to CBS which annually secures between six and 12 Big 12 appearances.) Also, up to an additional 40 games can be placed on ESPNU.

Thanks for posting. That answers my question.

KU usually plays 2 conference games a year on CBS. Once against Texas and once against Mizzou. Now that Missouri is no longer in conference this year that game is WVU I believe.

I think you are right. I remember those games being on CBS in the past. As for ISU, I'm not sure that I ever remember them having one on CBS. Not positive on that though.

I think that if ISU continues to be an upper tier team in the conference, then the KU-ISU game would be a good candidate for CBS. Have one on Big Monday and one on CBS.

vs Kansas 1997 (Willoughby scored 36 with 9 3pt FG)
vs Kansas 1999 (Fizer dunk in final minute)
vs Kansas 2001 (Sullivan and Power going ape ****)
