If I had to guess, I'd say it's OU. Okie State has better wins and doesn't have the bad loss like OU does (lost at home to Stephen F. Austin).

CW loves Kruger so much that I'd like to propose this question to him: If you were an athletic director of some school other than ISU right now (since ISU has a legacy factor with Hoiberg) and you could have only Hoiberg or Kruger as your coach, who would you choose? I personally wouldn't put it past him to choose Kruger.

This is true. Actually after TCU and Tech, we have a stretch of six games that could be tough.

    vs. Kansas State
    @ Oklahoma State
    vs. Baylor
    vs. Oklahoma
    @ Kansas State
    @ Texas

Really think ISU needs to go 4-2 at worst through those six. I'm feeling 5-1 more likely. Protect Hilton in all three, win in Austin, and split the games in Stillwater and Manhattan.

Going to be an interesting stretch. Certainly moreso than the next two with TCU and Tech, where it feels as a fan like ISU has absolutely nothing to gain and a lot to lose.

Yep, I think you have to win at a minimum all the home games in that stretch. We really should also win @ Texas too. This stretch will really show us what we are made up for sure.

We'll find out a lot more about OU in the next 2 weeks.

Numbers are still good -- 15-ish RPI, 16 SOS ... so far it's all on-paper. Good wins don't seem impressive (A&M, Oklahoma State) and top-100 RPI losses (Arkansas, SFA) seem "bad."

When I see that TCU write up...I get a little nervous for tomorrow. I don't want to be the 1 in their 1-17!

    Tier 2
    Kansas State
    ISU
    Oklahoma
    Baylor
    Oklahoma State

Tier 3 (the all defense - zero offense tier)
    West Virginia
    Texas

    Tier 4
    TCU
    Texas Tech

I agree with those tiers. I think the absolutely most important games on our schedule are the home games against the teams in our same tier. If you lose at home to someone in the same tier, then you should probably get dropped down a tier. Gotta take care of those.

Do you both get dropped down a teir if you also beat them on their court?

I agree with those tiers as well as your statements.

However I wouldn't be surprised if only the top four teams get in to the tourney this year.

Re: ISU Still #2 in ESPN Big 12 Power Rankings

I think OU is legit, and frankly, i think they are number 2 or 3 in the conference. They return all 5 starters from last year, and 3 of them are coming off the bench this year. They now have preseason newcomer of the year Amath M'baye, and freshman Buddy Heild who has been lighting it up the last couple games. Their best player, Steven Pledger, only plays 26 minutes a game. That speaks to the depth they have, and their depth is a reason why i believe they are the 2nd or 3rd. Like others said, well find out soon if they really are legit.

Here are my thoughts on # of bids for the Big 12, right wrong or indifferent and I base them mostly on RPI

RPI Rk Big 12 Conf All RPI SOS Rk SOS
    2 Kansas 3-0 15-1 0.6934 3 0.6180
    14 Oklahoma 3-0 12-3 0.6408 12 0.5935
    34 Kansas St. 3-0 13-2 0.6008 107 0.5206
    38 Oklahoma St. 1-2 11-4 0.5981 36 0.5611
    40 Iowa St. 2-1 12-4 0.5964 69 0.5453
    42 Baylor 3-1 11-5 0.5937 19 0.5774
    81 West Virginia 1-3 8-8 0.5527 16 0.5845
    144 Texas 0-3 8-7 0.5125 90 0.5312
    223 TCU 0-4 8-8 0.4661 210 0.4826
    235 Texas Tech 1-3 8-7 0.4587 206 0.4837

As you can see, the Big 12 has 6 teams in the Top 42 for RPI right now, which if the season were to end now, could actually make a legitimate argument to get 5-6 of them in. However, these will change as the season goes on and the key for all 6 of those teams is avoiding bad losses, particularly no losses to Tech or TCU. If teams don't avoid them, we could slip to a 4 bid league, while if teams do avoid them, I could even see us as up to a 6 bid league. I know, I know, everyone would be outraged at the Big 12 getting 6 bids when we are down so much this year and would never let it happen. However, based on RPI, which the selection committee DOES use, I could see it possibly happening. No matter what happens, I see the majority of the Big 12 teams that make the tournament being relatively high seeds (bad seeds) except for Kansas. The fact of the matter is that the Big 12 has one elite team right now, no really good ones, and a bunch of decent teams.

It would fit a Kruger team perfectly — not many expectations, then comes an un-flashy team with experience that finishes in top 3 or 4 in the conference.
