Post NOTEBOOK: Bill Fennelly press conference nuggets (1-14-13)

The Cyclones will host Oklahoma on Tuesday night at 7 - the Sooners are 4-0 in Big 12 play.

--- Coach has a lot of respect for Oklahoma's program. The Sooners have been riddled with injuries this year but are still producing. Not a big surprise to Fennelly.

--- On Saturday, TCU's coach compared Chelsea Poppens to Oklahoma's McFarland...Fennelly says that McFarland shoots the ball better but Poppens is a better offensive rebounder. Two kids who compete hard, do things the right way and don't shy away from contact. Both players are emerging as seniors that every team needs.

--- More on Poppens...Chelsea had been getting frustrated prior to the TCU game mainly because she hadn't been scoring many points. Obviously she bounced back with 24 and 15 vs. the Horned Frogs on Saturday night.

--- Andrew Logue points out that normally, a guard is the "face of Fennelly's program." Not this year. Poppens is the one. Fennelly points out that guards can shoot it if they want it, whenever they want to. Poppens creates her own looks by working hard, offensive rebounds, etc.

--- Interesting - When Fennelly looks at Big 12 stats, he takes Baylor out of the equation. Wants to see the rest of the league for comparisons. Baylor is on a whole other level.

Yeah, while I was looking at the conference games stats this morning it was easy to see who had played Baylor so far this season and who hadn't.

Man I'll be glad to see Griner graduate. I have a feeling that Bill will travel to Waco for that graduation ceremony.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

    ...
ISU is the only team that will be done with Baylor by the end of January. In addition to ISU, a couple other teams have only 3 games separating their matchups with Baylor -- TTU and Texas, but those are in February. Texas does not get their first game against them until Feb. 9. TCU, WVU, and KSU all have about a month and a half between their games with Baylor.

Not much new at coach's lunch on campus today. He did say that Jadda has Ames H.S. circled on her calendar to be back from her ankle injury. That she had had lingering issues after a previous sprain, so they are being cautious to have her 100% at state. He did mention in recruiting that they are also looking at players (presumably posts) who have played their 4 years in other sports. And he mentioned that they had 4 close calls in finding a true center for next year's class, but as has been documented on this forum, each choose elsewhere. That is all I can think of that he hasn't already talked about...

Sorry, thought of one other thing. Our PF from Arizona is running for the first time this week, coming back from her injury. He said her surgeon and her trainer work with the Cardinals, so she is in good hands. He expects all three scholarship players to compete immediately for PT, if healthy.

Was that a reference to a volleyballer? I'm am concerned about a doughnut team next year. Baier had respectable credentials as a recruit, but, we've not seen anything this year to suggest she'll fill that hole in the middle next year. That's not to say she can't, but, she hasn't gotten the pt to show much.

“We’ve got a pretty good football conference, and we’ve got a pretty good conference overall. We’re still walking around with our heads held high and our chest out, about that.” Paul Rhoads

It was a very vague reference. I imagined he was talking VB, but not sure if he meant ISU or other schools, or maybe both. He did say if we have to play small, we can do that. Brynn at the 4? We could see it... When you are recruiting, the final decision is always out of your hands. He also got the question about how they are working with Maddie to make her a Big 12 player down the line. He said she has all the desire and work ethic they could ask for, and they are working hard with her to build a good foundation for continuing improvement.

On Monday night's radio show, the topic came up again. He said (paraphrasing), Christie's got some great athletes on the volleyball team and he would welcome them. Nothing specific. One could also interpret it as simply being complimentary of the program. He also said he's very happy about the players coming in, and that Fred is showing it's possible to have a good team without a true post.

Last month he said they are specifically following transfers, since they are growing in number every year. I assume they will be looking at other sport athletes just like that. Not just a specific player in this specific situation of need. You probably aren't going to find a starter in a one-and-done year of eligibility, but who knows.
