Anyone think Baylor made the right decision?

Baylor has fired their coach, Guy Morriss, with a year left on his contract. Granted he didn't do very well, but they are Baylor after all. I think it would have been better to let him finish his contract, then quietly not renew it. As it is, I have no idea who they expect to get who will be better.

Rumor down here is that they've approached Houston Nutt. There's something definitely going on with Nutt and the media are all over him trying to get him to confess but he's staying tight lipped.

Exchange the word "Baylor" with "Iowa State" and didn't we hear that same thing from many in the national media and were offended by it?? Maybe Baylor is going to raise their expectations like we are.

Sometimes there's more than a win/lose record to a coaches performance. Indicators inside to program that are not visible from the outside (aka Wayne Morgan) that let you know changes are needed. This might be the case for Guy Morriss.

They are now at the bottom of the pile and unable to recruit successfully in Texas. They needed a change. Another job open for Dan. Maybe they can hire the Kansas offensive coordinator...

Well, Lee Barfknecht of the Omaha World Herald seems to think that Baylor should go after McCarney, because of what he accomplished in Ames. He also says that a hot coaching rumor for Morriss's replacement is Mike Singletary, who is apparently being pushed by some of the big name donors.

Except Iowa State went to several bowl games and competed for 2 conference division championships. Baylor has finished last in the South for as long as I can remember.

If you think the Iowa State job is a tough one, Baylor is even tougher.

I agree with you as far as recent memory goes, but Baylor actually has had quite a bit of success and the people that experienced that success are still young enough to be heard. I believe Baylor went to bowl games when you really had to earn it, but without looking it up I can't say how many.

Kind of hard to recruit if you can't walk into the kids house and tell his parents you'll be around for a few years.

The problem is Baylor is Baylor and this happens every 5 years.

Baylor's behind the 8 ball as a small private school in a league of big public ones but there's no reason they couldn't have some success with all of the talent in Texas. McCarney might not be a bad fit there.

Mac would have them BCS bound in 35 years...maybe. They just need to give him enough time. I wish them luck and tolerance.

Re: Anyone think Baylor made the right decision?

Do you think they're even thinking BCS when they haven't been to a bowl in more than a decade? They need someone that has shown he can build a program from nothing into something. Once they get that done they can decide if he can take them to the next level.

Re: Anyone think Baylor made the right decision?

I thought it was the wrong decision. Unless Houston Nutt is coming in or another bigger name coach, probably one who has never been a head coach. They were making progress the last 2 years, but fell back this year.

I agree that Baylor is much harder position then ISU. We don't like having the "tough" rotation of OU, Texas, TTU. They get them every year, plus Kansas this year. Tough place to build a program.

Re: Anyone think Baylor made the right decision?

Baylor has the same problems that everyone saw at ISU. Two years ago they looked like a fairly decent team. They won a few big 12 games including a win at ISU. Last year they took a step back, this year another step. Now they have backed themselves into a wall, just like ISU was with Mac. Their guy didn't have as much success as Mac, but he didn't have as much time because things turned bad more quickly. Baylor could have given him one more year, just like ISU could have given Mac one more, but it is all about selling faith to the fans and it wasn't going to happen at ISU or Baylor.
