Re: 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma

I feel that with the smaller trucks the extended cab is good for throwing a set of golf clubs in the back and not much more. There just isn't enough room so I would go with the crew cab if anything. (I had an S10 extended cab 20 years ago)
I currently have a 2006 regular cab Colorado that I will most likely trade in this year. It has been good inexpensive transportation. I have driven it out east 3 or 4 times and most recently to Memphis. Depending on the wind and hills I get 23-28 on the highway with that little 4 cyclinder and 19-21 in town.

Yes, I can't tow a boat or haul a ton of crap around, but it works just fine for picking up basic stuff from Home Depot or a new TV, couch etc.

I can't say anything about the Nissan or Toyota as I have owned neither. Those 2 vehicles have been around for quite a while so they obviously are worth it.

Re: 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma

Always go with the crew cab. If you think extended because you want a bigger/longer bed, then it is better to bypass these smaller pickups & go with a full-size.

I'd say if you are one that keeps vehicles a long time, then go with the Tacoma. Pay more up front, but it has a better track record of not breaking down and maintaining its value.
If you are one to trade every 3 or so years, then do the math & see what best suits your budget. I've heard a number of Colorado owners who have liked their rides very much. Only know a couple who have had Frontiers, 1 in particular would drive no other. Think they hold their value better than a Colorado, but unsure how they are comparatively vs Tacoma

You could get an extended cab full size and have the same room as a crew cab midsize truck and close to the same MPG

I would not put the Colorado in the same sentence as the others right now. But the 2013s are supposed to be pretty sweet, you might wait and check them out. There are even rumors of a diesel version that will have good power but with good gas mileage as well.

I've got a 2008 crew cab Tacoma and absolutely love it. More room in the backseat than my old Jeep Liberty. I'll probably drive this thing until it dies, which is hopefully in a long, long time. If you're interested in going the Toyota route, PM me. I'll personally get you in touch with Tron Smith at Wilson Toyota and he'll take great care of you.

The Colorado is trash. If you must get a chevy at least get a silverado.

Frontier/Tacoma are the best. I have a frontier and it's been solid. I think it comes down to personal preference (or the best deal at the time, which is what sold me).

Re: 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma

My next vehicle will be a Frontier. I don't think you can go wrong with either the Tacoma or Frontier, but the Colorado has remained unchanged for quite some time now and I think the features/quality do not compare to the other two - and this is coming from a die-hard Chevy guy.

I'm getting the Frontier instead of the Tacoma for two simple reasons: 1) I got rid of my old truck (Sonoma) about 5 years ago due to fuel economy issues and got a Nissan Altima -it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned - 114K miles and I haven't put a dime into it, so I'm sold on Nissan & 2) I like the fact that there are fewer Frontiers on the road than Tacomas - I like the idea of having a vehicle that is less common - not really sure why, though.

Re: 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma

I'm a Chevy guy, so I'd say Colorado. But nearly everybody I know with a small truck has the Tacoma. And I've never heard a complaint about them. Nissan vehicles (especially trucks) drink gas like it's going out of style.

I don't particulalrly care for small trucks anyway because they don't get that much better mileage and don't cost that much less than a full size truck. But they're easier to get around in, and fit in places. There's some places in DSM I dread taking my Silverado Crew Cab

I'm a big Crew Cab fan in general. And inferring from the questions in the OP, cab space is probably more valuable than bed space.

My family has had two Colorados and never had a problem with either.
