Taking my 19 month old boy to Hawaii next Saturday

I don't want to be that guy on the plane that has a screaming kid. Suggestions on what we can give him or suggestions for him to do for the 8 hour trip? What's worked for other parents out there?

Something to chew/suck on so he can clear his ears with altitude changes.

Re: Taking my 19 month old boy to Hawaii next Saturday

I travel quite a bit. Thanks for asking.

    1. Keep him awake before the flight so he will sleep during the flight.

    2. During takeoff and landing, make sure that he is eating something, drinking from a bottle, or using his pacifier. The swallowing helps relieve the pressure on his ears. This is the single best thing to do.

    3. Don't shoosh him loudly. That is more annoying than the crying.

    4. Just cuddle him if he gets noisy. Usually, the comfort of being in your arms gives lots of relief.

    5. Don't talk to him like he is an adult who understands what you are saying (e.g. "just another 30 minutes and we will be there.")

    6. Don't let him kick the seat in front of him, bang on the foldout table (that is connected to the seat in front of him), or poke at the people around him.

    7. Make sure you are on the aisle so you can walk around with him as needed.

    8. If he is intolerable once you are in the air, sit with him in the bathroom or ask the flight attendants if you can stand with him in the galley when they aren't using it.

    9. Dress him in a pro football jersey. You may gain some extra compassion if you are sitting near fans of that team.

    10. The odds are 50/50 that you will find some ultra-compassionate grandma who will want to help you. Also 50/50 that you will get the ultra-grumpy guy who complains to the people around him loudly enough for you to hear it. If so, implement #11.

    11. Be ready to buy drinks for the people around you if it gets bad. Maybe even have cards already printed to give them as an apology.

You can't take anything larger than 3oz through security. You can always buy it at an airport store post-security. Won't be cheap, of course.

You can take a regular sized bottle on the plane as long as it is empty. So, you can mix formula like normal. The flight attendants (or vendors at the airport) will have microwaves for warming it.

I think they have a provision for mother's milk. Not sure.

You can put whatever you want in a 3 ounce plastic bottle.

Benadryl is a good idea. So is a little brandy in the apple juice.

I would not try that for the first time on a plane. I would rather keep him up for a while before hand and see if you can just cuddle him to sleep.

Keep him on the *** throughout the flight. It may calm those around you as well.

19 is nothing.. I did it with a 11 month old! Cheerios is what worked for us during takeoff and landing. Coming back from Hawaii is obviously overnight.. And surprisingly we had a little bit harder time coming home.

the Hawaii baseball team was on our flight home. So I chatted cows with them.

Re: Taking my 19 month old boy to Hawaii next Saturday

I've travelled with my son as 6 month old and an 18 month old. Not that long, only to AZ. No big problems either time, each time, each flight someone commented (with a relieved tone) how good he was.

IANAD, but not a big fan of the Benadryl idea. Partly because in general I prefer the least medication possible, partly because personally, I'm one of the odd ones where instead of making me drowsy, Benadryl gives me insomnia. If your kid is one of these, you'll have a tired kid who can't sleep, and that ain't gonna be good.

    Your mileage may vary.

Again, not as long of a trip, but we had good success with a new toy just for flight out, and it went bye-bye until the flight home. If you get the right toy, you know they'll sit for up to an hour just playing with it. Worked good for us.

Snacks: GoGo squeeze applesauce packs. Less than 3 oz, so you can bring them. I think we went thru 6 of them each way. I say that particular brand because the Mott's and others I think were larger than 3 oz.

Re: Taking my 19 month old boy to Hawaii next Saturday

Let him stay with grandma and grandpa, take me instead! I'm small, I will sit under the seat if necessary.

(not a parent or frequent traveler but I think half the battle is just being aware and conscientious about your child - I've been lucky enough to sit ahead of the kid who is enjoying kicking the seat and the parents don't care to make them stop)
