Terrible Blown Call in Michigan/South Carolina Game

Did anyone see that terrible call by the official in the Michigan/South Carolina game. Michigan ran a fake punt and ended up getting it. ESPN showed a camera angle looking down the line and there was about a 2" gap between the sticks and the ball. Spurrier and the official were right there and Spurrier just exploded when they gave them the first down. How do you miss a call like that? That ref should be fired. It ended up not mattering because Michigan turned the ball over on the next play (Clowney hit), but still, that is in-excusable.

Obvious and plain that it was not a first down. I don't understand how that was not corrected.

An absolutely terrible call, but with out it we never would have seen that Clowney tackle.

And for those that missed the first down measurement, this is now considered to be a first down

Re: Terrible Blown Call in Michigan/South Carolina Game

Regarding the Clowney hit, it's no wonder that there is such a concussion problem in football when a player's helmet can come off that easy. What happened to the chin strap or is that just a decoration? I know it was years ago but when I played, it took some effort to get the helmet on and off. Now helmets seem to come on and off with no more effort than a baseball cap. Seems to me there is a awful lot of room for the head to move around inside the helmet.

Not saying that wasn't a great hit, just that player safety seems to be a big issue but equipment regulations seem to be getting looser.

Re: Terrible Blown Call in Michigan/South Carolina Game

Those officials sucked. A blind man could see they were short. It is a wonder that the officials didn't overturn the fumble and call Clowney for leading with his helmet. Or that the helmet came off prior to the fumble so that play stopped and no fumble.

IMO, those officials should not even be allowed to referee Pop Warner football. The call was inexcusable.

From what I've seen, dreadlocks sure don't help the issue.

Hence the rule this year about the players sitting a play out if their helmet comes off. I did notice that helmets seemed to stay on better as the season went on.

I thought the game where they called the FG good when it was clearly not was bad, but atleast they corrected that bad call.

That was the actual first down measurement. If you look in the pic the ref is signalling first down. It was really bad. Looks to be 2 links on the chain short to me.

That ref needs to get punished. I think he refused to correct it because he didn't want to get showed up by Spurrier, but it is unbelievable he called that a 1st down.
