Time for an “I hope we don’t lay an egg on Monday” thread

This is our twelfth bowl and win or lose we have really only played well in two of the eleven preceding this one. The only two games we played really well in were the 1972 Liberty Bowl and the 2000 Insight. We lost that ’72 game but it was a terrific game to watch and we went for two at the end to win rather than kick for the one point that would have ended the game in a tie. The rest of our bowls are not memorable (and not just because they were minor bowls), even the couple we won. When the third “best” bowl memory is a missed field goal against Alabama than the bowl performance history just ain’t too pretty. Not sure why the uninspired games like the bowls against TCU and Rutgers are more the norm than the Insight against Pittsburgh but it is. These should be mini-Super Bowls to us, not exhibition games.

As noted in Chris’s article, 7-6 looks better than 6-7 for a team looking to move up a notch in the college football pecking order. The sports guys here in Mpls at the Star Tribune wrote a similar assessment of the Gophers who will be looking to go 7-6 today and not 6-7. If we want to move up we need to look like a team that is ready to earn a better spot in the Big 12 and in the bowl pecking order. Tulsa is going to want this one bad, revenge the loss and beat a Big 12 team on national TV in a bowl game that actually has a history that spans more than 10 years. Reminds me too much of the lead up to the TCU game.

I want our performance on Monday to match our impressive fan support. Star Trib reported 2000 Gopher tickets sold last week for their bowl and we sold 14,000. Right now bowls are more impressed with our fan support than our team. Look, I love our guys but I don't live in Cyclone country and know how others view us. I want the bowls to be as impressed with our team and want our guys for the football interest with fan tickets just a bonus.

I just hope their coach doesn't act like Greg Schiano did every single time Rutgers got a first down last year. It was like his team had never gotten one before... I wanted to punch a hole in the wall everytime the camera showed him

SR12 will have a nice game i think. Kid seems pretty chill and steady. Biggest thing I think ISU has going our way is Coach Mess is way better with the playbook than he was game 1. James White is playing right?

What about the resounding 14-13 Victory against Minny 3 years ago? How could you leave that out!

The important thing to remember is that we've already beaten Tulsa this year. So, within the natural order of things, all signs point to us winning again.

Ah, the pirate indicates you remember having to rely on than freshman MarQueis Gray fumbling so that the Gophers could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

Re: Time for an “I hope we don’t lay an egg on Monday” thread

If we come out with surprises....using multiple quarterbacks, new plays, etc....we will be fine. And early too. Don't save the trick plays for when we might be down and choking....use them in the first quarter proactively and shock the other team. A big part of bowl psy-ops is proving to the other teams players that all their preparation that the listened to their coaches preach was not exactly correct....doubt comes early.

If we take the "Well, it worked for us to get here, so we will keep doing what works" approach and run the same playbook they have been practicing for us for a month, their defense will be tee-ing off and then most likely key players get hurt and then we are scrambling. Sounds like a lot of Cyclone bowl/MacCarney bowl history to me.
I will never forget Dan yelling "smashmouth, smashmouth" to our guys and everyone in the stadium on the Boise State half yard line for like three plays in the freaking humiliation bowl and we couldn't get that half yard. We didn't deserve to win that.

We've not yet performed well in a bowl game under Rhoads. Here's to hoping that comes to an end Monday.

Just blow this stupid Tulsa flag logo team out Cyclones. Destroy them like a Big 12 team should.

If you stop the run you will win, Cody Green can not win the game with his arm. Our defense will be better this time around because Shawn Jackson is playing.

We better come out with effort. We have not set the bowl world on fire in our last few efforts.

Maybe it is time to start a "I hope Paul Rhoads doesn't run out of gas on the way to Memphis" thread?

You did not stop the run and Shawn Jackson was a difference maker, just saying..
