    Airfare trends?

I am looking to book flights for my family to Orlando out of DM for this June. Last year we bought quite a ways in advance and got a pretty decent deal (the 4 of us were able to go roundtrip for under $1000).

I am looking at both Allegiant and Southwest's monthly rate calendar and it looks like the cheapest rates right now are Jan/Feb, followed by March and so on with August being the last month they are currently booking and the rates are the highest in August (outside of a few dates around spring break, etc).

Does anybody know if there is a "typical" trend for airfare by the month? I am just not sure if these months are normally priced this way or if rates go down some as it gets closer and they haven't filled seats. My wife and I are both teachers so we're pretty flexible on the dates in June, just would like to find the best deal we can on them!

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

It doesn't seem like there is any rhyme or reason anymore, sounds like you are on top of it. Just keep checking periodically or have a fare watch notifier and be ready with all your info when you get your price.

I think rates tend to get higher when you look more than two or three months out. I think airlines dont know there expenses that far out so they price them higher. If I were in your shoes I would wait.

    Re: Airfare trends?

Airfares confound me. In May I went to Paris, it was $250 cheaper per ticket to fly out of Des Moines than out of Minneapolis. Honestly, I only checked Des Moines at the last minute assuming it would be much more expensive. Thank goodness I did.

    Re: Airfare trends?

Thanks guys, that's kind of what I was thinking. A couple of articles online said 2-3 months is usually the ideal time price-wise to look so I think I'll hold off for a bit. The only problem with Allegiant is they'll only have like 3 flights a week so I don't want to wait too long either!

    Re: Airfare trends?

Instead of flying into Orlando, check the airports around Orlando. We are going in June and found tickets flying into Melbourne for $80 cheaper per ticket from DSM. Every time I checked prices, Orlando was more expensive than Tampa, Daytona Beach, and Melbourne. We were already planning on renting a car, so it was no big deal for us to flying into an airport outside Orlando.

    Re: Airfare trends?

When you buy your tickets do so on Tuesday or Wednesday because tickets on these days tend to be cheaper than the rest of the week.

Also, it is usually cheaper to fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday.

Not sure on the month, but you usually better to book a month or two in advance.

    Re: Airfare trends?

We're heading to Germany in July. I'm a bit curious about when to buy and what rates to expect as well.

    Re: Airfare trends?

I have found on Southwest's website that they will sometimes drop fares significantly for just a few hours, unannounced, on random days. I've checked prices for trips I wanted to take in the morning, found one price, came back at noon and found a price that was, say $100 lower for a round trip (and made the purchase), then saw later that day that the fares had gone back to their original price. The trick with Southwest is to check them at least twice a day if you are seriously looking to buy tickets. It has paid off for me more than once. Yes, it's kind of a pain, but it only takes two minutes to look.

All people who make sweepingly generalized, stupid, uninformed comments are idiots.

    Re: Airfare trends?

I'm flying to Orlando in feb. got the tickets last April.. Checked Omaha dm and kc.. Kc was by far the cheapest. At $190 per ticket! I was pretty happy with that! Well worth the drive from sw Iowa to kc and a night in a hotel. It's like a 6am flight.

    Re: Airfare trends?

If you're looking through allegiant check the Sanford airport... If you can stand the bag fees.

Orlando airfares suck during school breaks - good luck. The best fares I can ever find outta here (which I would assume is the same for the opposite flights) are usually on American and are booked on a Tuesday

When I see allegiant prices higher then normal I start the purchase process till you get to see what seats have been taken. If it is pretty empty I wait. If it is starting to look full I generally pull the trigger. I had to pay almost $400 including checked bag to goto arizona over Christmas (generally higher that time of year anyway).

I have a conference in Vegas beginning of April and it seems flights right now are higher then normal there too.

    Re: Airfare trends?

Basically United, Delta, US Air, Southwest, and American are trying to buy out other airlines so they can drive the prices up with less competition. Coupled with TSA and fewer available seats, fewer people may decide to fly.
