    Proposed NCAA Recruiting Changes

Most of the proposed changes seem to support the goal of leveling the playing field. Mixed emotions on the providing traveling expense because it is a slippery slope. I'm in favor of student athletes getting paid like other students when representing/working for the university but it seems like it is opening the door to some creative abuse.

Let the volume increase from twitter, facebook, and other traffic sites begin to proliferate for the poor recruit. Unlimited contact may mean daily messages and calls.

    Re: Proposed NCAA Recruiting Changes

I'm okay as long as there are limits set. They can't end up with the big schools in position to offer more than other schools. If they want expenses paid then it should be limited to an amount that all D1 schools can afford. Otherwise we're going to get farther down the road of the haves and havenots.

Easy to say from the recliner.

Anyone that thinks that a paid tuition is fair compensation for a person participating in BCS level football needs to figure out simple math.

    Per year, at Iowa State:

    $18,760 of tuition and fees
    $5,257 of housing
    >$4,000 of food
    ~$1,000 of books
Free one-on-one tutoring and academic support services
    Free Nike gear

Not to mention expenses directly related to the team, such as bussing, plane travel, hotels, etc. that are totally taken care of, as well as use of the football facilities for things like the athletic trainers, weight room, etc.

You're looking at a total value of $30,000 - $35,000 per year for every single scholarship football player at Iowa State. Now imagine a player at a school like Northwestern or Stanford or a number of other places with much higher tuition costs, where their total value of scholarship is worth well over $50,000 per year for up to five years.

These guys are doing just fine.

Out of state guys compensation package is about 40K. Tell me what job I can get in Ames, working the same hours and making the same amount. Keep in mind that's for about 10 months. They have a couple months or so to work in the summer as well. I think it's plenty fair. Don't like it or think it's unfair? Don't play.

That's not even considering all the other goodies like apparel.

You make it sound like anyone can get a football scholarship, which of course is not possible. It is a supply and demand thing just like a CEO or even an engineer. A engineer pulls down a greater salary than a business major, why? They can do a job that the other cannot. CEOs bring a skill set and experience that a new graduate cannot. By your logic, a CEO or an engineer should not be paid more because they "are doing just fine." The football program brings in far more than hard dollars to the university. That is why CPR is one of the highest paid Iowa state employees. The football players and other varsity athletes can do something that the majority of students cannot. The university benefits far beyond the costs of "compensating" the individual athlete.

The average NCAA scholarship is worth $125k. That is $31,250 per year. That is $15 per hour in a full time job.

If you think creating millions of dollars in revenue and marketing potential for your employer is worth only $15 an hour to you, I'd like to speak to you about some employment opportunities. College sports is a business, a business in which the employees are forced to receive a compensation package below the national average and criminally below their true value.

To think these kids are getting a fair shake is naive.

So then let's take away the free education they're getting and just pay them for the job they are doing
