    Roads on Saturday

Anyone been out today? Going to have to take 35 and 20 later with the family and wondering what things are like. 511ia shows them still not in good shape and I see at the moment 80 West is closed to an accident just south of Ankeny.

    Re: Roads on Saturday

Not sure how much they've improved yet from last night. Took hubby 2 hrs to get from West town parkway to Ames. Top speed was most 35 mph. Semis were still jack-knifing all over the place. Highways were said to be better than the interstate. We need to decide about noon whether or not we head up I-35 to I-90. Once we get to Albert Lea the roads should be fine.

    Re: Roads on Saturday

It just amazes me on seeing these drivers out at 8 in the morning in their brand new car, white knuckling the steering wheel and going so fast they are almost going backwards. Talk about an accident waiting to happen!! Also the drivers that just remove enough snow so they can have a peep hole to see out the front and the back, while their car looks like a snow drift are just crazy!

I-35 between Ames and Ankeny was terrible last night. It was the worst I have seen a major interstate 36 hours after the snow stopped flying. Slow going the whole way, and very bumpy.

I came across the old hwy 30 overpass last night and saw both southbound lanes bumper to bumper as far as I could see. There had to have been an accident.

    Re: Roads on Saturday

Drove highway 20 across most of the state last night. Dubuque to 380 was 40 to 50 mph. Left lane was mostly clear. Right was hard packed snow/ice.

Around Waterloo was terrible and it wasn't helped by lots of idiot drivers that apparently didn't notice cars in the ditch every 100 feet. One guy did a 180 a little ways ahead of me in two heavy lanes of traffic. Amazingly was untouched.

It started gradually clearing up shortly after Waterloo. By Fort Dodge the road was fine.

I would just wait before going anywhere... It is going to be warmer and sunny today, should melt things nicely.

We are in no rush to get going today which is why I asked. Figure if we can be up to NE IA by 430 or so we will be in good shape. WIth the lack of wind yesterday and this morning I'm hoping that stretch between Ankeny and Ames clears off

I agree. This seems to be the worst the roads have been two days after a storm. Did everything turn to ice quicker than normal this time?

I hope it gets better. My mom and grandma were supposed to come up from Indianola, but that section is still a no tow zone.

    Re: Roads on Saturday

Last night my wife and I drove from wdm to forest city....it took about 4.5 hrs. I took hwy 69 all the to ames and then jumped on I-35. I-35 north of ames is smooth sailing...was going about 65 pretty comfortably.
