I find this surprising. I worked at the Coop just outside of town for a while and never had an issue with anybody in the area. I actually like the Newhall/Atkins area because it was close to a big city but still had that country feel.

Sad but true. One that sticks out did mention he grew up in Ames so I wondered if he ever even left town.

My wife grew up out there. Nice people and area with good proximity to CR and Newhall has a pretty good locker.

Those douchebags always act like they're big **** because they're "from Chicago." The few people I know who are ACTUALLY from Chicago are fine.
You realize we say we're from Chicago because nobody knows where Warrenville is? Or Oak Park? Or Lemont? It's just easier to not get a blank stare that way.

Edit: and after posting this and then finishing the thread, I see that my point has already been made about 3-4 times already.

As I've said several times, there's a difference between saying you're from Chicago because it's easier, and acting like you're better than someone else because you're from a city that you're technically not from. There are plenty of those guys (picture the typical "bro") on the Iowa campus, which makes up the overwhelming majority of my experiences with Chicago suburb kids. They aren't always just making things easier on themselves when they say they're from Chicago. Maybe you are, but not the bros in Iowa City.

So if I live on the west side of Des Moines, does that make me more Omaha than Chicago, or should I just go with Denver instead to sound coo.

This. How can you grow up in Iowa and not know of the second largest city in the state? Even the most remote hick living under a rock up by Larchwood surely has heard of CR

You'll have that at any small town townie bar you go too. Territorial locals trying to be cool/tough.

It sounds more to me like you just have a grudge against some very specific people.

    Re: Worst towns in Iowa

Agree with Al. I'd say the two northeast Iowa county seat dumps are Cresco and Waukon. Cresco the least friendly community I know. Waukon has been struggling.

Great county seats are Decorah, Osage, Elkader, and Waverly. I'd feel comfortable with my parents retiring to any of these four.

New Hampton and Charles City are below my four great ones. Potential to thrive or dive. I haven't been to West Union, Manchester or Independence lately but on my last visits I didn't leave impressed.

no.... Osage is a crap factory in the middle of nowhere (which is difficult even by Iowa standards.) The other three, great place. Osage is just a bunch of close minded townies so unless they have family there it is rather difficult to find your way "in" and when it is a town as small as Osage... if you don't know people, you are bored out of your mind.
