When I lived in Indiana, I lived in an Indianapolis suburb, but when out of staters asked, I just said Indianapolis? People know Indianapolis, IN. They don't know Carmel, IN.

I know Carmel, I used to live in Zionsville.

And getting back on topic, I have never really thought too fondly of the Stuart-Menlo area. Just doesn't seem like very many friendly people around there.

    Re: Worst towns in Iowa

Whoever says Iowa City is a good town has probably only been to the west side and downtown/campus. I worked in east Iowa City and it is skeeeeetchy. Even the Subway had that height ruler by the door to measure the height of robbers as they leave.

As for worst town, there a lot of tiny little towns through the state that are run down and a majority of the residents are drug addicts.

Le Roy is an incorporated city. It counts.

It makes you wonder how someone can approve that sign with a straight face, unless they've lived in the town their entire life and have way too much pride in it.
I'm pretty sure the Knoke sign was not approved with a straight face.

In college I started saying I was from CR since no one knew where Marion was and I got tired of explaining it.

Kind of surprising the number of people who had never heard of CR yet had lived in Iowa their whole life. Seriously the states second largest city and you have not heard of it?

A lot of people in eastern Iowa (especially in Iowa City) DO know Naperville, Barrington, Wheaton, Warrenville, etc. This year's crop of freshmen aren't the first kids to come from the Chicagoland area. We kind of have a pretty good grasp of where the burbs are now. And again, saying you're from the city because it's easier for people to understand the general area you're coming from is a lot different than acting like you're better than other people because you're from the city.

In Iowa, I don't believe there is a legal definition of town. A city is an area defined by boundaries that has a local government, regardless of population. So in my eyes, I would see a town as any cluster of homes that has a name but is not incorporated (for example, in Story County you have Fernald, Shipley, Iowa Center, and Midvale) as towns, and the ones who are actually incorporated and have a local government as cities (Kelley, McCallsburg, Collins, Zearing, Sheldahl)

    Re: Worst towns in Iowa

To me, a cluster of homes with a name is a town. It's a very general term. I've referred to large cities as "a hell of a town".

A city, is a unit of government in Iowa with set boundaries and a form of government that has been incorporated under the State

A lot of people wouldn't be able to find Iowa on an unlabeled map of the U.S. either. It's basic knowledge, but not everyone pays attention to stuff like that. However, it's sometimes even a surprise to these same people that water is wet.

All people who make sweepingly generalized, stupid, uninformed comments are idiots.

I don't believe that any 18+ year old Iowa native, in college, hasn't heard of Cedar Rapids.

That's exactly what I thought of. I drove by and saw that the school was for sale. I looked it up and it had a 350k price tag or close to that on it. Just the other day I looked and saw it was down to 275k. Someone seems to have attempted a bed and breakfast or something. How sweet would it be to own a gym.
