    A charity?

I've gotten in the habit of checking out charities that call to solicit donations. Here's the latest that you might want to stay away from. These kinds of charity siphon off the money that should go to actually helping people.

That is sad that people will stoop so low to act as a charity in order to steal money. There is a special place in hell for people like that.

I agree 100%. This organization is currently calling (supposedly) from Urbandale. Here's what really ****ed me off.

But that dialing came at a staggering cost. Under Friend's deal with the solicitors, fundraisers pocketed 85 cents of every dollar raised. Of the money left over, half was spent on printing and administrative costs, including the rented mailbox that served as the charities' official address. The other half, Friend paid in salaries to himself and his wife.
And money spent on food, shelter or clothing for those desperate veterans?

    $0.

The scary thing is there are people in this world with no conscience. I could never do something like this. But there are people who have no issues ethically with this sorta thing, and that is scary.

    Re: A charity?

My wife and I are in the habit of giving only to places we know about already. We are on the board of one non-profit, and give directly to a few more. While we tithe our income, we also have a list of "possibles" that are next up.

We re-evaluate our charities from time to time to determine if they are still doing their core mission, and reallocate funds should we think they depart that mission, or their costs get too high for the "bang".

One notable charity treated AIDS patients in Africa. We ditched them when we found they were giving AIDS drugs to prostitutes who were getting "well enough" to go back to "work". Dumb, dumb, dumb....
