    BOWL BOUND!

Bowl bound but not for ISU! What do you conclude from Tyler Lorenzen’s history?

As a high school junior in the state of Iowa, he puts up big numbers and is identified by several publications as a player to watch. He follows family tradition (both Dad & grandfather are former Cyclone running backs) and attends ISU as a freshman. But our former coaching staff says you can’t play quarterback, we will make you into an end. But Tyler says I want to play quarterback and thus leaves ISU for the California JC system were he becomes the league's MVP. Do we ask him back? No, but UCONN offers him.
As a Junior for the 25th ranked Huskies, Tyler will today go for his 9th win of the season. Of course he has a QB rating that is higher than Meyer’s.

Is it difficult to identify QB talent?

Conclude from this? Just another missed talent by previous staff............some of us where used to missed opportunties under D-Mac. Why the question now? The kid had a family history at ISU and talent. Lets run him off.......................

He would have never started ahead of Bret Meyer.

    Re: BOWL BOUND!

Its tricky. He probably got that good while playing in the JC system. In a head to head with meyer at the time they would have been after the starting spot - Meyer may very well have won out. This kids practice/coaching/experiences since leaving ISU have made him a better quarterback. Would he have developed into that if he had stayed? donno

    Re: BOWL BOUND!

As someone else said, our cupboard was full at QB. Frankly, he's not that great of a college QB, IMO. With that in mind, I don't view it as a missed opportunity. We would have been just as bad this year with him at the helm as with Meyer.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. You put this guy behind the lines we've had, we might have had success, or we may have been no better off.

    Re: BOWL BOUND!

Yes, that must be it, he isn’t that good……...except Scout listed him as a 4 star.

    http://connecticut.scout.com/a.z?s=342&p=8&c=1&nid=2761890

And then it’s hard to ignore the fact that he has won with 2 different teams. UCON will probably figure out that he is mediocre and bench him right after their championship and bowl game.

When are people going to realize that stars mean virtually nothing? Look at Iowa - they're filled with supposed 3 and 4 stars. Where are they at now? Likely sulking at home over the holidays with a bowl-eligible 6-6 record...

Coming out of HS he was a 1 star guy with no offers. Tyler Lorenzen Profile - Football Recruiting

Stars are largely meaningless. Lots of players have won with different high school or college teams. It doesn't mean they are responsible for the winning. Just because a player comes from a winning team doesn't make them automatically a good player. It's really pretty easy to ignore.

He's 58th in the nation in passing efficiency, 70th in the nation in completions per game, 63rd in the nation in passing yards per game, 58th in the nation in total offense.

The guy is an average QB. Sorry to burst your bubble.

    Re: BOWL BOUND!

After watching the game yesterday, I think we could have used him. Neither Bret or Austin looked prima.

Not until this year he wouldn't.

    Re: BOWL BOUND!

The question is if we insert him on to ISU's team this year to replace BM what would our record be? I would guess 3-9.

we could of had Tebow come to ISU and Mac

    still would have started Meyer.

    Re: BOWL BOUND!

Tyler is probably much better off where he is now. He never would have been as good as he is now if he had stayed in Ames. The previous staff could identify talent in recruiting, but they did not develop offensive talent on campus. (See Meyer and Blythe) The defense was developed, and therefore solid. But, apparently, unless you were a starter, you wouldn't get any attention on offense. I am just glad we aren't in that situation now.
