    End of the Big East?

Atlantic 10 open to adding Big East basketball schools, creating 21-team conference -- source - ESPN

The A-10 could go after the basketball only schools who are peeved about the football centric conference alignment. If I am Cincinnati, South Florida, or Connecticut I look for a way out now.

I assume they will look to the likes of the Big 12, B1G, and ACC. Considering we have waited so long in expansion to add a "profitable" member though, I figure we will only add the likes of Cincy, South Florida, and UConn if we can also add a Florida State or Virginia Tech at the same time.

Sorry, but I just don't see any of those Big East schools making the cut, even if they were part of a package deal with schools at the level of FSU, Clemson, Georgia Tech, or Virginia Tech. The just don't add anything for us.

Looks like Tuberville made the right call going to Cincy...oh wait.

I don't want to add them, I just figure it's a possibility. Although I figure that South Florida and Cincy would be interesting additions. In saying that they would have to be a package deal. My guess is Cincy is saying they will be in a different conference, otherwise Tuberville's move really confuses me.

This is crazy, but if the big12 could pick up FSU and Clemson or a similar combo, what about adding, say Georgetown, Marquette, Villanova, and St. Johns, or a combo like that to create a wicked 16-team bball conference?

Do not want. Half the problem with the Big East was the feud between "basketball-only" and full members.

Re: End of the Big East?

Isn't there still more money for these schools even in this debacle of a Big East, than what the A-10 makes? Lets face it this is about money. Thats why the report earlier this week said the schools wanted to take the name with them. That is where the money is.

I don't see them dissolving the league, unless they get to take the name with them. And there was some debate whether Temple had a vote in dissolving the league. They don't have the votes if Temple gets to vote.

Re: End of the Big East?

The Big East football schools aren't valuable enough to move up. They will still have 12 schools left for football if the basketball ones leave.

Re: End of the Big East?

It might be just wishful thinking, but some fans of the Big East basketball schools are talking about adding Creighton to the A10 if they go. Again, just message board talk, but thought it was interesting.

There could also be a move to a Catholic conference school.

Re: End of the Big East?

The Big East name has a lot more value for basketball than it does for football. I think you will see the basketball schools try to dissolve the conference in order to keep the Big East name and MSG tournament and invite the top A-10 schools into it rather than be absorbed into a monster 20 team A-10.

I agree with this part of your post, anyway.

This is what very likely will happen. ESPN doesn't want anything to do with BE FB on a going forward basis but they do want BE private school hoops. ESPN will also try to find neighboring UConn in a new conference home (i.e. ACC). Cincy and USF will likely be left out in the cold. They aren't of any value to the B12. They might be of value to the ACC if the ACC gets severely poached by the B10, SEC and B12.
