Re: Most snow you have ever experienced

In the Christmas Blizzard of 2009 we received a reported 15.5" of snow at my parents' home in southwest Iowa over the course of a couple of days. It's the most snow I've experienced out of one storm.

That snow fell on top of another 10-12" from a week or two before, but I was in Ames for that Blizzard.

I have never experienced two Blizzards in the same year, let alone within two weeks of each other. It was fun!

The most for me was New Years 1997 when we received two feet of snow in a little over 12 hours. The county was actually plowing driveways that next week because no one else could.

Re: Most snow you have ever experienced

Back in the mid 1980's Sioux City had a 2 foot plus snowfall that drifted into 6 to 7 foot drifts (in the City). We got out of school for the entire week because it took so long to clear the streets.

I think that snowpile at the end of the driveway took until June to melt...

I was a student at ISU and flew home to Denver (Westminster) and got this. 34" of snow in Thornton which is right by Westminster. The only time I saw snowmobiles go down our city streets. Our cars were totally gone from site and the chain link fences in our back yard the same. But it was Denver so even that much snow can melt in a hurry but it lasted 48 days on the ground which is unheard of for Denver.

We got 20 inches dumped on us in 2005 in March in Minnesota. I'm sure sometime in the 80s too more than that...seems to me there were a few 25 inch storms but in my conscious memory it was 20 inches about five years ago.

Twenty incher in Baraboo, WI, in 1974. Nothing moved for a day as we did not have very many plows. My brother had a couple of 28 inchers in DC in the last ten years. He had a long driveway.

We had 22 inches in Raleigh NC in 2000. Craziest thing. They talked about a couple inches over night, we woke up the next morning and were in shock. Nothing moved for a week. Had to wait for snow plows from MI, plus my street never was plowed. Good thing we could walk to a grocery store just to get out of the house.

Re: Most snow you have ever experienced

Lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia back in the early 80's. 24 inches.

They canceled school before it even started to snow. Being from Minnesota/Iowa we thought that was pretty stupid. I guess not so much.

But no drifting. A consistent layer 2 feet deep everywhere with no wind at all.

2003 - Spring Break in Colorado

MODIS Data - Colorado Blizzard of March 2003

Foothills got 87", Denver got 31.5". We were stuck in this hotel for a few days. Luckily there was a 7-11 within walking distance to keep us fed.

Amazing how 40 or 50 miles in Iowa and Nebraska is the difference betwee 2 feet of snow on the ground and not much at all.
