Actually my head says Volleyball or Cross country. I would say wrestling if we had a coach I thought could do it, but to hire a good coach would be very expensive.

I do believe everything I said though. Just because those are the closest doesn't mean that they are the most likely. Volleyball has some powerhouses that are next to impossible to break though. Penn State, Nebraska, Stanford, UCLA and USC have won 19 of the past 22 titles.

Winning a title in the 80's or 90's isn't the same as winning a title in 2013. After doing some research, there are more schools from non-snowy climates that win womens cross country, but not that much more. I don't think snow would be a issue.

    Re: Which ISU sport

W Cross country, then volleyball. Even if we're not a dominant top 3 team, only have to have a couple wins over top teams to win it all. We've proven we can do that. Plus with it being a tourney sometimes other good teams get knocked out of your path in upsets along the way.

If we had upset Stanford, we wouldve faced 2 beatable teams next (michigan, and texas- who we obviously already beat), then all of a sudden we're in the title game. Not that crazy to imagine.

, I started this thread. It wasn't which team was the closest, it was which team would take the least amount of investment to put them over the top. My point is that just because they are the closest doesn't mean that they will be the easiest to get to.

I personally think it is easier to break though and win a MBB title than it is to win some of the lesser women's titles because certain programs are so dominate and have been for so long it is next to impossible to break though.

So Volleyball and womens CC. What kind of investments would get us there? It has been a long time since we have had a national new trophy.

    Re: Which ISU sport

Women's cc or Volleyball. Don't know what we'd need investment-wise for CC, but for volleyball getting our own facility might pull in the big time recruits. We get some recruits who become great players, but we haven't snagged a player in the top 20 - ever, I believe. Straube was #22 and I believe she was our highest get.

    Re: Which ISU sport

Last time I was in Hilton I looked at the National Championship banners there. As I recall 12 or 13 of our 18 National championships came in the 1970's. I don't why we were able to do so much better then, unless our coaches were just far better than the competition. Maybe other schools have started putting more money into those sports.

There were some different economic times in collegiate sport but the 1970's elicited some great coaches at ISU and some of the greatest in their sport ever.

Football John Majors and Earle Bruce (both in College FB HOF)

Basketball Maury John (sadly, he dies of cancer as we are emerging) and then some failure

    Wrestling Harold Nichols (legend)

Track and XC a young Bill Bergan (HOF at ISU and legend in track circles- not Bowerman but highly regarded

Gymnastics Ed Gagnier- (legend in his sport)

Swimming Jack Maguire (one of the all-time greats at ANY school)

Baseball Capp Timm (College WS and iconic figure)

We have some good coaches in place but that was a special time at ANY school. We were bringing on facilities that were the best in the nation at the time (Hilton, JTS and even the SW Complex was cool in the 70's) and the pool at Beyer was pretty great by those standards and was also kind of an identity as a historic facility and home to pretty good teams).

We quit building in the 80's and early 90's and made some bad hires along the way.

football -well they all failed except Mac and he won at a 40 percent clip. They were not all bad hires at the time on paper. The hires couples w/ hideous leadership led to extended failure.

basketball- we have done okay for the most part. Not sure how WM got the job other than Bruce's reptutation and the LE fallout scared off candidates.

Wrestling- gonna feel that Sanderson thing for a long time

Track- Steve Lynn kind of "Waldened" us and gave up.

Volleyball- prior to CJL was one big ugh!

We were VERY close to back to back titles in womens XC the past two years. If Dani ran this year and Alphine (4th overall this year) does not choose nursing school early, we win both titles.

Mens and Womens indoor track could muster a run or two in the next year or two as well

Wrestling should have had one by now since 87

Hoops (men) was one Blarge away from a crown in 2000. Does anyone think we lose to Florida?

Gymanstics (women) losing KJ doomed the program maybe forever

When men's swimming was cut- we had just finished 10th at NCAA Championships.

It will happen here again. The leadership and facilities and most coaches are in place for another "Golden Era" to occur.

    Re: Which ISU sport

That's the great thing about cross country. You don't need to invest much. They run on public trails a lot and their cross course is a top notch facility. Not to mention that we have one of the best indoor facilities in the country and the recent outdoor track facility gives the program the brightest short term upside. We have all of the shiny things recruits look for including a strong recent tradition.
