Re: Should ISU have done more to keep Greg and Doug McDermott in Ames?

Again, the guy was not a good coach at this level. It was the worst hire ISU has ever made. We're moving on nicely now with him outta town. He's a mid-major coach at best....that is all. Ask Dana Altman how he's done @ the Big-Boy level too. Some guys just can't coach in Div. 1 or in the Big 12. "He-who-shall-not-be-named" is one of them. Never bring him up again. (They are only good now because they play NOBODY and his son is a solid college player.)

He is a good midmajor coach. Doug is a good player, but lets not forget he coached 4 players that saw sometime in the NBA when he was at ISU. There is just a huge difference in coaching a mid major and a major conference team.
He would have been tough to fire at that time hovering at .500 won/loss record. Yet, now, with the new B12 revenue, we now could have afforded to buy him out.

Re: Should ISU have done more to keep Greg and Doug McDermott in Ames?

It was one of the luckiest things ever to happen to Iowa State when McD went to CU and ISU did not have to fire him. I agree that I bet he warned Doug not to go to ISU. Also I don't remember what exactly was going on or if it was really disclosed well with Morgan leaving but I never had the feeling under his program that I did under Floyd, LE, or now Fred. Who was hired after McD left, how lucky is that!

What is truly amazing about this thread is that this guy wants credits so bad that he will make himself look like a total jagoff.

We should have fought harder to keep Jim Criner. GMac and ISU are both in better places. Good luck to both programs going forward!

I do not think that he thought Doug would be an All-American, and a much better player than Dad. Doug scored 30 last night...

Let's see how Creighton does in the tourney when it faces a Big 10 or ACC team, or any team from a major conference that has a pulse. Also, let's see how GMac does once his son is in the NBA.

He didn't get it done at ISU. Period.
I agree with everything about GMac that you wrote, however, this year's Creighton team has already faced an always solid Wisc team and the Arizona State team on neutral courts and handled both of them by double digits. Creighton is a legitimate threat to make the second weekend come March.

After watching him play the past 2.5 years, I think the Doug could have handled himself in a power conference. I think he would have developed into a Homan-style player with more intangibles. Gmac didn't want to take the risk with Doug and thus putting him in the fan's ire because of his father (Dan and Cody Hawkins for example). I respect Greg for that.

I am enjoying Dougie and Gmac at Creighton, but I would never think about what if's in regard to them at ISU.

Could we have done 50/50 gotten Doug and allowed CU to grab Greg? I'd probably take that one.

I am very happy this thread got revived today. I tend to avoid the site for 24 hours following a loss and 48 hours following a loss to Team Goofy Looking out east. I would have missed this comedy completely.

When Drake High School Hammered us at the Nap center all that greg mac could say was: "There are more important things than winning a basketball game". Or words to that effect....

GMac on the power level is a REAL LOSER...I thank creighton every day for taking him off our hands.
