    Thanksgiving week travel

sounds like it's going to get mighty interesting next week

    AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DES MOINES IA
    314 PM CST THU NOV 15 2007

...WINDING UP A MAJOR WINTER STORM ACROSS
IOWA ON THE EVE OF THANKSGIVING. OTHER MODELS INCLUDING ENSEMBLE
MEANS ARE MUCH WEAKER AND MAINTAIN MORE OF AN OPEN WAVE THAT STAYS
TO OUR SOUTHEAST. HOWEVER...EVEN THE GFS ENSEMBLE GIVES A FAIRLY
HIGH PROBABILITY OF PRECIPITATION OVER IOWA WED AND WED
NIGHT...FALLING THROUGH AIR COLD ENOUGH TO SUPPORT SNOW.

SOME RAIN IS POSSIBLE AS EARLY AS MONDAY WITH COLD FRONT
PASSAGE...THEN WITH FRONTAL BOUNDARY STALLED TO OUR SOUTHEAST AND
BANDS OF MID LEVEL FRONTOGENETICAL FORCING AND ISENTROPIC LIFT TO
THE NORTH OF THE BOUNDARY...BUT WITH LOW CONFIDENCE ON TIMING AND
AMOUNTS...WILL JUST MAINTAIN A LOW CHC OF PRECIP RIGHT ON THRU
THANKSGIVING DAY. A SLIGHT NOD TO BETTER CHANCES OF PRECIP WILL BE
GIVEN TO TUESDAY...THEN AGAIN WED AND WED NIGHT. SEEMS THAT OVERALL
TREND IN THE BULK OF THE MODELS IS TO BLEED COOLER AIR SOUTHEAST
ACROSS IOWA THROUGH THE PERIOD...SO ALL RAIN INITIALLY WILL BECOME
RAIN OR SNOW...POSSIBLY EVEN SOME SLEET DURING THE TRANSITION
PERIODS...THEN LIKELY ANY PRECIP BY THANKSGIVING DAY WOULD FALL AS
SNOW. AT THE VERY LEAST...WE COULD BE LOOKING AT 2 TO 3 DAYS OF
UNSETTLED WEATHER...WITH SOME PRECIPITATION TYPE ISSUES DEVELOPING.
AGAIN...THIS IS OUR BEST ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE SOME HOPEFULLY USEFUL
DETAIL AS WE HEAD TOWARD A HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIOD...BUT WE ARE STILL
SEVERAL DAYS AWAY AND THERE IS MUCH TO BE IRONED OUT.

Wooohooo!! Glad I am not going past my deck that weekend!

But isn't it a little early to know this?

Waaaaaay too early. However, some people like to start crapping their pants and running around like frightened little school girls early...and then they complain about the forecast being "wrong".

I am flying back to Iowa from Texas on Wednesday night. I am more concerned about flight delays than I am driving conditions. GRrrr...

Too bad we don't have a Spraguean "simple".

    Re: Thanksgiving week travel

I did my traveling this past week. I visited Las Vegas to visit family, and to attend to some personal legal matters. At the same time I was leaving the court house (Tuesday), Mr. OJ Simpson was entering the facility. I thought that I had been around a media circus before, but the media that is covering this story is at another level.

    Re: Thanksgiving week travel

My wife, daughter and I are leaving for Des Moines on Saturday. Sounds like we'll be early enough to avoid the worst. We also need to drive to Eastern Iowa mid-week. I guess we'll play that by ear.
