UNLV play by play man on KXNO

I heard this guy on my drive in this morning. He compared UNLV's quarterback to Brett Meyer, and generally didn't talk about the Cyclones at all, just how upgraded the UNLV team was. It seems a bit of a stretch to compare a one game starter against a Division IAA team to the Big 12's best player and a third year starter. To be fair, I missed the very last part of the interview, so maybe he gave the Cyclones some respect after I quit listening.

No, it's not a stretch. Rocky Hinds was a 4* recruit, got unhappy about being behind some guy by the name of Matt Lineart and transfered out of USC. Bill Callahan was in on Rocky after Callahan came to Nebraska.

So 2 years of experience in the Big Twelve has no value? What about the rest of his bio:

It sounds like Hinds could become a quality quarterback. My point is that until you have more than ONE start under your belt, comparing him to an All Big 12 quarterback and three year starter is stretching it. He may be the second coming in the WAC, but let's see him play a few games before putting him up there with the best of the best.

If Hinds was a potential all american quaterback at USC like some people seem to think he was, why wouldn't he wait a year and beat out Booty? I think the reason he transfered was that he wasn't good enough to play at USC. Not that he isn't a quality player but many people just don't pan out, ISU has them, USC has them and every other program in the nation does too. So for him to play one game against a D1AA and play well doesn't mean he is in the same leauge as Meyer or other Big 12 quarterbacks.
    But maybe I'm wrong........:)

Well I'm pretty sure Booty is an All-American candidate as well, he isn't a scrub, and they also have Guttierez or whatever, the redshirt freshman who is a potential AA some day, Hinds just didn't beat them out. UNLV guy didn't say Hinds is as good as Brett Meyer, he compared their skills, which are comparable, and I wouldn't want him talking about ISU, that isn't what they are talking to him for, they are getting a scouting report on UNLV.

If we don't get a pass rush and tighten up our pass defense in general, ISU will make any QB look like a seasoned QB......witness Toledo's QB last week. If memory serves correct, he was making his first start as a Rocket.

I live up in MN and obviously didn't hear any of the radio show, but it seems to me that the comparrison is appropriate.

Maybe not apples to apples, especially when discussing experience, but both QB's are big, tall, have good arms & accuracy, and both of them are dual-threat types. So while they may not (or may) have similar skills, their style of play seems to be quite similiar.

I certainly don't want to under-estimate him and get burned. I think we need to stay focused on his ability to run, like we did last year with McNeal and Brad Smith. Otherwise, we might find ourselves in big trouble.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - David Peeples scored two touchdowns and wide receiver Ryan Wolfe set a UNLV freshman record with 160 yards as the Rebels beat Idaho State 54-10 Saturday night.
Wolfe caught six passes, including a 71-yarder from Rocky Hinds early in the fourth quarter to lift the Rebels to their first season-opening victory since 2003.
Peoples' short scoring runs helped end the half with 27 straight points.
Erick Jackson added a 29-yard scoring run and Hinds scrambled for a 7-yard touchdown.
Hinds, a Southern California transfer, was 24-for-42 for 322 yards. He also had six carries for 42 yards.
UNLV's defense forced five turnovers and added two touchdowns late in the contest.
Jeremy Geathers returned a fumble 67 yards for a score and Ryan Worthen returned a blocked punt 12 yards for another TD.
Idaho State quarterback Matt Gutierrez was 17-for-32 for 260 yards with a touchdown and interception.

    Media Luncheon Quotes

    UNLV Head Coach Mike Sanford
    Sept. 5, 2006
On junior kicker Sergio Aguayo's knee injury:
"He will be out for sure for four weeks and could come back after that with a brace. If he comes back, he will only be a field goal kicker. This is what Sergio wants. He can rehab, get his MCL to heal - they heal on their own - and then brace it. Hopefully he can function as a kicker but that remains to be seen."
On freshman kicker Ben Jaekle's performance against Idaho State:
"The interesting thing about it is that he didn't do as well as I expected him to do but obviously there were extenuating circumstances. He was up in the stands, drinking lemonade, probably had a hot dog in his hand when I called him, so he didn't really get a chance to warm up."
On freshman kicker Ben Jaekle making his first start against Iowa State: "I think he is going to surprise a lot of people. I think he is a very good kicker."
    On Iowa State's offense:
"They have nine of 11 starters coming back and they have a very good offense. They have probably the best receiver in the Big 12 in Todd Blythe and then they have the preseason All-Big 12 quarterback in Bret Meyer."
"With all due respect to (quarterback) Matt Gutierrez and Idaho State, this is the Big 12, a team that was in a bowl game last year and they are bigger, stronger and faster. It will be much tougher."
On playing Iowa State on the road:
"It will be a big challenge going into a Big 12 stadium, on the road, against a team that has gone to a bowl game five of the last six years. They are a very good football team and it will be a big-time atmosphere." "We have to be able to play well when we are on the road. We are in a stretch where three of our next four games are on the road and the next two weeks we are going to extremes east and west and we have to be able to play well. That is part of college football."

    On Iowa State's program:
"I have great respect for what Dan McCarney has done at Iowa State. He has improved that program and they have gone to bowl games in five of the past six years. He's done a great job there."

    BLOCK THAT PUNT.

I guess it says something about Hinds that he was the #8 rated QB recruit in the country even though he missed almost his entire Senior season with a serious injury! He redshirted his freshman year at USC and transferred after that, so I really don't see that he had any competition with Booty, etc. College Football News named him the #1 transfer last season when he left USC for UNLV. Possibly he wanted to play for the UNLV coach (deep ties to USC as player & coach) who was going to Vegas from Utah after making Alex Smith the #1 pick in the NFL draft! I hope our defense doesn't underestimate Rocky Hinds or it could be a long day!
